24io problems

Post by autophase »

Hi guys, I have been having a few problems with my 24io interface lately.
There had been some transformer buzz coming from the unit, then the other day the speakers let out an almighty pop (so did my pants) and the interface froze. I turned it off left it for a bit then poweered it back on. But I got the random strips of LED's freezing which I have read about here.
Anyway having a little bit of electronics experience i opened it up, i could see that one of the 2 transformers werent seated properly, so i applied some downward force and it eased back into place. (my guess is dry solder joints underneath the transformer had softened with the heat produced by the tranny, that coupled with lamination rattle over time it could easilly disconnect) Now the interface works fine but ive still got the buzzing, which to my knowledge is lamination rattle of the transformer.
I guess my main question is would motu swap it out for a refurb unit for $75, as I have heared they do some times (im in the UK however, so this may not be possible), or is anyone aware of a way i can remedy the buzzing my self?
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Due to the fact that the 24I/O has a pair of transformers, it does seem to buzz quite a bit. Much more than my 2408 Mk3, which has only one.

I think your issue with the dry solder joints are probably similar to mine. The transformers, when running on 230-240V (as in the UK for you and NZ for me) seem to get very hot. The transformers in my unit get so hot that the unit starts to smell after just a few minutes of operation. To cope with the extra current requirements, rather than spec'ing a more powerful transformer, they just dropped in two of the unit they had spec'd for the 2408. I believe they may be under-rated and therefore overheat.
