MOTU Ultralite MK3

Post by aetneerg »

I have a MOTU Ultralite MK3 and it comes with a software disc. On the front there are some numbers for the key code and serial number to register online at MOTU.com. When I install the software what is this key used for? I don't know why it's on the front of the CD envelope for. The software doesn't ask me for any serial or code. So anybody know what this key is used for?

For some reason I can't figure out, Motu won't let you access parts of their site unless you register on the website. For example, until you register, you can't get to the web page where you can download updated drivers. And that serial number on the CD sleeve is the number you need in order to register on the web site. Without that number, you can register for full web site access.

Frankly, I think it's idiotic. First of all, it's easy to lose a paper CD sleeve. Secondly, the whole point of a company web site is to increase product visibility, and you can't do that if your web site isn't fully "visible". (What's particularly bad is that they have their downloadable manuals locked within this restricted area. I prefer to read a product's manual before buying the product. I almost didn't buy a MOTU product just because I couldn't download the manual first). Third, if someone buys a secondhand unit without the CD sleeve, he's out of luck getting software updates. Every businessman with half a brain knows that repeat business is one of the most lucrative things to pursue. And you can't get repeat business if a customer's first experience suggests that the company has no interest in helping customers.

I've also heard that the company has problems with people not being able to actually contact anyone working there.

MOTU seems to be a very aloof, non-customer oriented company. Maybe it's one of those arrogant macintosh mindset things. (ie, "We're so valuable that customers should come crawling over broken glass to _us_"). But, the vast majority of companies with that mindset don't last long. Just in case, I've been keeping an eye on alternatives to my one Motu purchase, should I decide that I want to go with a company that's more in tune with the wintel PC marketplace mindset of "if I don't really hustle to offer my customers at least everything my competitors are doing, I'm dead meat".
