Help with levels (returns) 896mk3

Hi
I'm having a heck of a time with getting enough volume for mixing
from Sonar into soundforge and/ or other software using the
896mk3 Stereo returns.

I am using Sonar 11 , but had the same problem with all other DAW's

I have to turn the MAIN out so loud that I add un-needed noise
in order to get even to -8 or -6 DB

I am using Berringer truth b2031a's which cant be turned down all the way ... so instead of blowing my clients and myself out of the room
Ive been mixing the music I composed for CBS TV in headphones...
its a drag.

There has to be a way to get proper output from this unit
Ive not had this problem with lesser units from Motu or from other companies (eg Delta 1010)

I always had enough output for mixing

can someone tell me what I'm missing
please
