Simple little app for monitor brightness

Post by Dan Worley »

We purchased a new 17" MBP with an anti-glare monitor for my boss. Neither one of us like the display. It's hard on the eyes. I don't know how to describe it, but even after turning down the brightness it seems overwhelming and rough and hard to focus on. It's like having to listen to heavy metal when you want to be listening to classical. Not subtle in any way, and when scrolling it's a disaster. Her old MBP 15" display is much better.

We were about to return the 17" when I thought of trying a little app called Shades, which my boss uses on her iMac. With Shades, we were able to get the display dialed in and make it more comfortable for her. My boss has RP (a degenerative eye condition) and only has 4% of her vision remaining, so her needs are much different than most, but Shades made the monitor more comfortable for me, too. It allows you to adjust the brightness in finer degrees than the OS control, and, if needed, you can also adjust the hue and saturation and value with the OSX color wheel.

It's free or you can donate if you like.

Note that Shades may interfere with color calibration software, and should not be used if color accuracy is critical.
