POLL: Would you pay for DP Control for iPad? How much?

Post by James Steele »

We're all familiar by now with DP Control for the iPhone and how cool it is! As an iPad owner, I've been hoping for an iPad optimized version of DP Control that would utilize the greater screen area and perhaps give us more faders and other enhancements. So far there's been no official word from MOTU on this.

It's my hope that they will make one. For all I know it could be in the works. I do know, however, that I myself would certainly be willing to PAY for an iPad version of DP Control, and if it isn't in the works already, maybe if MOTU could recoup some of the cost by charging for it on the Apple app store, it might increase the likelihood of an iPad version?

This is ALL speculation on my part. All of us know how tight-lipped MOTU is and I have no idea what MOTU's plans are, but I'm hoping if there's: A) a demand; B) a demonstrable willingness on the part of DP users to pay *something* for an iPad version; or C) all of the above; we may just get it. So here's the poll:

I don't have an iPad, but if there were energetic support development with apps for DP I'd go for it. If I ever felt that my eagerness would generate prices along the lines of ProRemote for ProTools, it would be deeply discouraging.

An iPad is number one in my to-buy list. So when I get it, I would certainly purchase DP Control for iPad in a heartbeat.

Tascam DM-24, MOTU Track 16, all Spectrasonics' stuff,

I can't speak for MOTU, but given how full-featured the iPhone app is for FREE, that IF MOTU charged for and iPad version (and I don't know that they would) I'd be shocked if they'd price it that outrageously. ProRemote is $99 or or something. Again, if MOTU charged for it, I can't imagine it being that ridiculously expensive. For starters, it's enhances DP itself so it's sort of a "value-added" for DP.

Of course, you're right. It really is about "value" and not so much about cost.... and it goes further than the price of the software. Support would have to be robust. I don't *want* an iPad, but with rock-bottom considerations coming in at $500, that "value" has to be assessed. If support is energetic, I'd even have to look at the $829 iPad if I were to be honest with myself.

I'm all for any hardware and software that supports DP. I've ached for such things for ages, but I think I should send you a PM....

I use DP Control on an iPod Touch and it's magic, I can stand wherever I want and put my Touch in my pocket whenever I don't need it - or else I can use a gorillamobile clamp to clip it to a mic stand. I also have an iPad and if it ran its own version of DP control I would use it in an entirely different way (more as a hands-on bank of faders) but I don't think I'd use it nearly as often as it wouldn't have the convenience of the Touch. If MOTU do develop an iPad version I would suggest that they do it with this in mind and probably charge to pay for costs. I hope, however, that they don't decide to charge for DP Control on the Touch!

I would welcome an iPad version, although frankly at the moment on my iPad the main transport and locator page is fantastic at this size as a nice dedicated remote next to my MCMix, especially with the large markers display. I am trying to not look at or rely on the computer screen quite so much when I am mixing - rather like when mixing with tape and consoles - so this really fills the gap.

Perhaps a little more screen real-estate for the tracks and mixer page, this would be useful for working away from the computer.....

It's all great!!!!

To me, the existing apps are worth $9.99 and a more fully featured iPad app would be well worth $9.99.

Off the top of my head, the main feature request I would have for an iPad (or iPhone) version would be to have transport controls available on every screen (especially the faders screen)

If Apple development spec allows it, I could even see using the Volume Up button for play, and the Volume Down button for stop, and clicking the Volume Down button twice for return to zero.

DP Control is awesome on the iPad now (man, I love that little app), but I would very much welcome an iPad-optimized version. $9.99 without even blinking.

Seconded. Very good point.

Oddly enough, I've sometimes run DP Control simultaneously on my iPhone 3G and my iPad. I have the transport controls on the iPhone and the mixer on the iPad and it works great! :)

I would gladly buy an ipad control app if it offered plugin control, this for me is the biggest weakness in the motu product line. of the controller apps out there, mainly automap, none of them work with MAS.

DP really need right click MIDI assignment like live more than anything else(for me).

hands on plugin control is what I want the most out of DP.

something like the DP control app where each fader is assignable to a VI parameter with bankable controls/faders and I would buy an ipad just for it.

I think a few bucks wouldn't hurt my feelings at all for anything that works well with DP..

But,

I don't have an iPad yet. I would frankly like to see them get bigger first. I mean, they gotta be at least as big as the one Captain Picard had on Star Trek.

DP Control for the iPhone is fantastic, but I haven't been sold on the idea of getting an iPad, so I'm having a difficult time with this poll. What are you guys using the iPad for? My impression is that it does what my iPhone does (sans phone calls), but on a larger screen. Is there something I'm missing? :?:
