896HD + Talkback + Listenback + Headphones

Post by white31337 »

Hello all,
I've been having some serious trouble using the CueMix DSP console with my MOTU 896 HD. Nevertheless, I am an amateur, so if I say something silly, it's because I've no idea.

First question:

So, how do you regulate the headphone volume without changing the volume of the main out? The headphone jack is connected to the front panel in the jack next to the "Footswitch (punch)." Also, the toggle in between "monitor level" and "volume" is switched to "Main Out + Phones."

Second question:

How do I set up talk back + listen back? I have a vocal booth, and I'd like to communicate with the vocalist. Here is my set up:

The headphones are connected as mentioned in the first question and are worn by the vocalist. I have a pair of speakers connected to the main outs in the back panel. The microphone in the vocal booth is connected to "Input 7." The microphone in the control room is connected to "Input 5." On Cuemix DSP I had the talk button assigned to "Analog 5," and listen on "Analog 7" (side note, I don't understand why listen exists, when I can always hear the vocalist saying something through the mic...). The "Phones" option in the toolbar (next to Talkback and Control Surfaces) is on "Follow active mix." Under the "File" option I have "Mix 1 Return Includes Computer Output" and "Harvardware Follows console Stereo Settings." When I configured talkback, I tried various talkbacks and listenbacks, but none worked.

Third Question:

When I have my Bus 1 on "Main outs," I hear things well and I see the meter showing the signal; but, when I change the output to "Phones 1-2" the signal is lost (even though I hear things on the main outs but not on my headphones as connected by way of "First Question"). So, I tried to open a separate bus, such as "Bus 2" to see if maybe my output to "Phones 1-2" would work there, but again, no sound on my headphones (but sound is playing through my main outs) or signal in the "output" meter.

Thanks for the help!

Did you run the "MOTU Console" utility? I think there are some settings there concerning Windows output assignment.

If you mean the MOTU Audio console, then I've only two options: general and 896HD. (Note: I'm using Windows XP.) In General, I have sample rate at 44100, Clock Source Internal, Samples Per Buffer 512, and I have "Enable Multi Channel Wave Synch" checked. In the 896HD section, I have Optical Input Off, Optical Output Off, Phones Assignment Phones 1-2, Sample Rate Conversion None, Programmable MEters Analog Out, AES/EBU Meters AUES/EBU in, Clip Hold Time 4 seconds, Peak Hold Time 2 seconds.

A listen mic/button exists for those times when you are, for instance, recording a loud electric guitar or drums, and the microphones do not sufficiently pick up the performer's voice for communication purposes. You would not want this mic to be open while recording.

Of course you would not really need this when recording a vocalist.

Cheers
