I currently have an old dual processor G5 machine that I need to update. I run a commercial studio and routinely run 24 to 36 tracks all day long. I do all my mixing through 2 Tascam DM 4800 consoles. I use the EQ and compression and fx in the consoles most of the time so I rarely stress my current G5 but I'm also still running an old system and DP 4.6. So I need to upgrade. Will the new quad core at $2499 be enough? The thing is I also have to update all my software, get a new PCI card, and get a new monitor so if I can get away with the lower priced computer it would be a help. The studio business is not what it used to be so even though any purchase is a tax write off I'm still worried about spending too much.
Thanks for any advice.
Bill

Re: which new mac pro?
From all I"ve heard, if you rarely stress the G5, you won't be having any trouble with a quad-core Intel! You might even consider a used Mac Pro... ask James (site moderator) about his happiness, having recently moved from G5 dual to Mac Pro quad. I think he paid about $1k for his second-hand Craig's List Mac and has been very pleased with the performance.

Just beware of CL ads that need to move something quickly, as a friend of mine with access to such information tells me that most CL Mac ads are stolen goods.
