my first finished project with DP7.2

Post by dpdan »

Hi everyone,
I have not posted any music for a long time and just finished a recording of this beautiful piece of music written by Jules Massenet entitled "Meditation from Thais".

I wanted to have my friend Jack Cannon create a MIDI file of all the parts from a score so
we could collaborate, and share the fun. Ironically the score only had the solo violin and the harp. :(

So, Jack created a MIDI file of the harp and violin in Finale and sent it to me, then I went to work. Thanks Jack!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jack just bought the DP7.2 update and loves it!

I then picked out the rest of the parts by ear. The most fun was putting my heart and soul into that solo violin.... what a tremendous instrument!

In this recording, I use the following instruments...

(1) Garritan Stradivari Solo Violin

1st violins GOS
2nd violins GOS
violas GOS
celli GOS
basses GOS

(1) flute GPO
(1) clarinet GPO
(1) Bassoon GPO
(2) french horns GPO
(1) harp GPO
(1) timpani GPO

Altiverb is Mechanics Hall Worcester MA USA.
Created using Digital Performer 7.2

MP3 7.5 Mb. @192 kbps.

WAVE 57 Mb.

Enjoy!

Excellent. Can someone tell me how to tame the Garritan Strad?

Thanks a lot!
I would be happy to send you the MIDI file for the Strad of this piece,
and an MP3 without the Strad so you can experiment.

Very nice, Dan.
It's beautifully composed and the Garritan instruments you used, sound really good.
Excellent work.

Thanks again for helping to tame the dreaded Strad, Dan! The cut around 5kHz helps, a lot, but I still can't get results like you! Do you use any of the reverb in Kontact? Or, do you record it dry and bus it through Altiverb? I don't see where you use any keyswitches, either. Is there any particular articulation you prefer?

I do indeed record all instruments to separate audio tracks dry.
Kontakt is only used to load and route the instrument into a stereo DP audio track.
In this recording I only used the lowest "C" keyswitch.

Here is a video tutorial where I explain my preferred routing when I mix orchestral music in DP.

Here is another toot I made about a plugin called MW Compressor that I almost always use on stringed instruments.
It tames the shrill frequencies that get on your nerves... when set properly of course. :)

Kind of OT, but the more I listen to that violin solo the more I hear quotes in "Send in the Clowns" and "Oh What a Beautiful Morning". Not to disparage Rodgers or Sondheim.
