Hello All. I'm new on here and I hope someone can help me. I have tried relentlessly to talk to someone at Motu but just keep getting a busy signal. Than I found this forum!
I have searched through threads and although there seems to be similar problems to the one I'm experiencing, not one that fits exactly.
I have been using Motu stuff for the past 12 years. I basically just use it for audio recording at the moment. I started with a G3 and then switched to a G4. I have been using a G4 with the Firewire 828 (mk1) with no problems for the past 10 years. Not too long ago I started having crashes because of my hard drive. Of course I was in the middle of many projects! I was able to back up most of what I had tho and had to wait a bit before I could get upgraded.
I lucked out and was given a basically new G5! buy a friend who never used it and was leaving the country. I went out and bought Mac OS 10.5 and upgraded the OS to 10.5.8. The last Power PC OS I can use. I went out and bought an extra 2 gigs of RAM so now I have 3. I Purchased the DP7 upgrade (I used DP3 for almost 10 years!).
I installed DP7 on the new Mac and then installed the firewire and USB drivers from the Motu website.
I opened up DP7, did all the little things that they suggest for max performance and then opened a project. I Uploaded a mixed down stereo file from and old project just to see what would happen. Everything seemed fine until I tried to play it back. I started getting Clicks and Pops and very strange behavior from the 828. Besides these clicks and pops, the audio would just shut off and then back on, all the lights on the 828 would start just going crazy, audio imput lights would flash (nothing pluged into it at all) the optical lights blinking, etc... I have never seen anything like this. really crazy behavior from the 828.
I made sure the clock was set to internal. I changed the buffers, I triple checked the sample rates. I have no idea why it's doing this. I even rebooted the G4 with DP3 and got the same behavior on my old system!
I went and bought a new firewire cable, tried all the different ports, and although it seemed less drastic, I still get Random cut-outs and clicks and pops and lights flashing. It's through the headphones and speaker outputs.
I am at my wits end and I am totally tapped out financially from this upgrade. I have never had any problems with the 828 besides having to change the fuse about three years ago.
here's what I have going on
Mac duel 1.8 power pc. 3 gigs ram. DP7 fresh install. Mac os x 10.5.8 fresh install. Firewire 828 original. Like I said before. Nothing is connected to the 828 besides firewire.
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!

im not savvy on specific DP issues but It sounds like a simple aliasing problem.
I have had the same problem in Pro-tools and its usually just a matter or processing and latency.
I would try adjusting playback parameters and see if you can isolate it.
although if your playing back one simple piece of audio thats already mixed then i hate to say but it may be that your comp is obsolete...
goodluck

Hi, I don't know much about tech stuff, but I posted this thread last week and fixed my own MOTU issues by downgrading my driver.
