Apogee Duet Aggregate Device

I recently purchased an Apogee Duet (though I've yet to receive it). I've considered my MO, goals, gear, and budget, and concluded that using a Duet is by leaps and bounds worth any small compromise introduced by only two outputs i.e. occasionally routing individual already-recorded tracks through hardware.

But somebody in another forum claimed to have created an aggregate device with Duet and "built-in output." This ostensibly yields 2 in / 4 out.

Has anybody tried this? Thanks.

If your not tracking drums or more than 2 tracks @ once, they are unbeatable because the drivers are ROCK SOLID and very tightly integrated for the Mac since they are only supported on the mac!
You can't say that for dual platform hardware.

With DP you you shouln't even need to create an aggregate device. In DP's 'Hardware Setup' you can select multiple devices by ctrl-clicking each device you want included (select the Duet and then ctrl-click built in audio - both should be highlighted). Then the I/O for each device selected will show up. If you're using another DAW (i.e. Logic), then aggregate devices apply.

NazRat is right. I don't have the duet, but I have a Rosetta. If the Duet works the same way, it's pretty much plug-and-play and DP sees it exactly as NazRat described. No need for aggregate devices. BTW, Appogee uses the Apple FW drivers, so no need to download drivers from Appogee.

That's very interesting. I already have an HD192. I wonder how the converters stack up.

I currently use DP 6.0.3 installed in a G5 Dual 1.8, 4 G RAM 10.4.11. I got the Duet working properly. I discovered that, unlike some interfaces, the Duet will function only with a short firewire cord, like the one included.

A third output via built-in audio, set up as advised by NazRat, works like a charm. Next week, I'll acquire a G5 Dual 2.5, 6.5 G RAM running Leopard. I don't foresee any problems using Duet, provided I use the correct driver.

The sound quality is superior to what I expected. I don't delude myself that I have Grand Poobah ears, but I'm no slouch either. At first, unbalanced outputs somewhat concerned me, but in practice, with my setup, they present no issues. My studio is a one-person operation, both technically and aesthetically; I hate clutter and gear with unnecessary (to me) functions, so the Duet suits me fine.
