How to get rid of hum

Post by SmilesLots »

I have an oid cassette tape recording of me on my Martin D45LE (wish I still had it guitar). What is the best was to get rid of hum, and maybe even does DP have a plug-in for it. I will be gone for the next 3 days, but TIA. I do have a Toast 10 Pro Sound Soap app. Never used it, so far.

You have sound soap use it, I have had good luck with it.You may also try some EQing after using it.

I've got the Pro version of Soundsoap, and I've had good luck using the broadband section of the plugin, using the "learn" function while looping an area consisting of only the hum or other noise I want to get rid of.

Don't have Soundsoap, but iZotope RX does this very well.
I guess Soundsoap will do.

At first, I would reach for a simple solution: MasterWorks EQ with the FFT analysis switched on. See if you can use subtractive EQ to eliminate the hum without severely changing the guitar tone.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Well I tried a notch filter set at 60 and 120 hz. Helps, but now some of the bottom end seems missing. Played around with some different frequencies to get rid of some other noise. Not really any improvement. Too bad. It was one of my better improvisations at the time.Guess there's really no way to make a bad recording into a good one.

I tried Sound Track Pro from Final Cut Stuio and it is amazing - it got rid of almost all the hum and noise. Incredibly easy. I will definitely be using this on other recordings that are quiet noisy. Thanks for all your suggestions.
