Depressing and Low Tech

Post by Todzilla »

This tune http://www.toddejones.com/songs/KillingMe.mp3 is pretty low tech. No virtual nuthin's, just using DP as a reel to reel (although I used a lot of the native plugs with DP). And I confess to finally breaking down and using some pitch correction (yeuchhh!!!) after my 20 something vocal takes still couldn't cut it all the way round.

There's more work to do, especially with the bridge vocals and making the doubling/tripling a lot more subtle.

But let me know what you think.

Cheers,

-'Zilla

Low tech, schmow tech. I think it sounds great. Sometimes using DP like a reel-to-reel is a good thing. But, there was that one spot where the pitch correction really came through (might wanna work on that).

Overall I think it's a great recording! Please do post the final version when it's ready.

I like it!

The voice got me-- it reminds me a little bit of Elvis Costello, but then there was some other element that was genuinely gut-wrenching-- and I like stuff that's gut-wrenching. That means it's got some emotional beef behind it.

Great tune, btw. That refrain is really nice-- the G-minor section.

This tune just needs more guitar. The piano is a great color for this song-- but dude-- with a song entitled "You're Killing Me", few things *weep* like a guitar on a song like this, except for maybe tenor sax--- but I think this tune needs a weeping guitar (however "gently" it weeps).

And this is coming from a pianist.

Once again, the voice is stunning!!

Thanks guys. Yep, it only took 20-some takes over three different sessions to get my voice to sound like it doesn't completely suck!

Phil, what/where pitch correction? This is the first time I've stooped to it, so I hadn't quite figured out how to subtlize it. If you can give me a time, I can focus in.

And I'm glad y'all like the groove. I feel like I'm finally figuring out how to get a decent drum sound (all real drums, no time alignment or triggering).

It's really not that bad. I'm hyper sensitive to it, I guess. It's right around the 1 minute mark. "There's no DNA."

Anyway, I got a chance to listen to this a second time. Dude, this is good stuff! Keep up the good work, man. I really enjoyed it. 8)

Man, I really thought I knew where this song was going, but when you turned it around on me I got the chills. Kind of like when I saw the "The Sixth Sense."

Good job!

I'm not all that crazy about parts of the bridge, but you know, maybe you can still work it out, or I can live with it.

Love the feel and guts in this. Very visceral and raw. Yeah, sometimes your voice is shaky and you clamp down on the ends of your lines or don't quite hit the notes, and I can sense you thinking about the notes coming up and that's kind of distracting. But you know, work on it. It doesn't need to be perfect, just honest. Perfect would kill this song.

Regardless of any of that BS, it's a great tune. I found it to be quite powerful and profound and clever. And it sounded good!
