DP 7.1 crashes when I press play
Hi
I've been running DP7.1 for a while quite happily but now its crashing whenever I press play!
I had DP5 and went straight to 7 then 7.1. 5 is no longer on the Mac.
I'm using an iMac separate hard drive 2.4ghz dual core Intel, with 3Gb RAM with a MOTU Ultralite mk3, but am currently using the iMac outputs for some mixing work.
The only thing that has changed is installing Amplitube 3 but I was running this fine in DP7.1 until the crashes started.
I've been wanting to rework an old track from DP5 and have ended up importing one vocal soundbite to test the problem in a brand new DP file using the previous DP5 file as a template. I've tried disabling all plugins, trashing prefs, doing a disk repair, disconnecting al hardware and other obvious things.
Could it be some weird thing to do with the imported soundbite or the using a template from a DP5 file? This seems pretty bizarre if its the case.
Any ideas anyone?

Did you try moving your audio units folder temporarily? I would suspect a plugin first.

Re: DP 7.1 crashes when I press play
First, trash the preferences file at /user/Library/Preferences/Digital Performer/ Then create a new file and see if it still crashes.
Also, try Disk Warrior and/or Disk Utility on your startup disk. You may have directory or similar issues resulting from a bad install.
Have you trued simply removing Amplitube 3? If no, try that also.
If that all doesn't do it, I'd also move all Audio Units from the component folder to another location, then trash the AudioUnitInfoCache (same location as prefs) and restart DP. Try again with a new file.
If that did the trick, quit DP, replace all AU plugs in batches of ten or so, restart DP after each batch and have DP scan them. Test after each batch until you crash again. If you do, the last batch contained the offending plug. Remove plugs from that last batch one-by-one until you're good again. In that case that's your culprit. If a plug is indeed to blame...

Re: DP 7.1 crashes when I press play
Are you using mono or stereo Amplitube? I've had crashes in the past using mono.

Re: DP 7.1 crashes when I press play
If it is corrupt audio, that could probably cause this problem. I had a situation where the project would just crash on loading, as did all my backup versions of the project. Turned out to be something corrupted in the Audio Files folder.
Actually transfer your Audio Files folder to the TRASH (the whole folder with all its contents), and try opening your project again to see if this changes things. NOTE--you can't just move the Audio Files folder somewhere else on your hard drive or DP will still find it and refer to it. You must put it in the trash. You can bring it back out of the trash after performing this test.

Re: DP 7.1 crashes when I press play
Hi all
Thanks for the help.
I've removed both versions of Amplitube I had.
I also have some other IK Multimedia plug ins that might be the culprit.
I was using stereo amplitube I think - I have had problems in v2 when putting a stereo instance of Amplitube on a mono track tho.
I've deleted the prefs twice
Remove all vs of DP7 and reinstalled from scratch with v7.0 and then straight to v7.1.
I managed to get everything working fine and got some distance with reworking the song and then it crashed and keeps crashing when I press play.
I'll try working on some other tunes to see if its the Audio file or something related to stuff coming from DP5, but I can't see this being the problem.

Re: DP 7.1 crashes when I press play
A single corrupt audio file could indeed be the problem. Here's a few more things to do:
Copy the project for safety,
Create a new project,
Load the sequence from the old project, including the soundbites etc. This will write the soundbites to a new location on the drive, and in the process may fix a bad header or similar. It will also create a new project file from scratch.
If it still crashes, try merging all the soundbites in each track, one by one. This will write entirely new sound files to a different location on the drive. After each merge hit Play and see if you still crash. Once you find the offender, you can open the original project and merge only the offending soundbite. This way you have access to all your edits etc. within the soundbites that are OK. Trash the offender off the drive then. (Of course be sure to always have old backups on your backup drive, just in case.)
Other possible culprits could be hard drive directory issues, either on the audio drive or the system drive, and/or RAM issues. Did you run Disk Warrior?
Another possible culprit could be audio bundles. You could rebuild them from scratch.

Re: DP 7.1 crashes when I press play
Hey Chris, have you defragmented that volume ever? I know in the past, I have defragged a volume (this utility is not used anymore
) and caused data errors due to heat problems caused while defragmentation. this could be especially if those files have resided on that drive for extended periods of time. I back up to optical.

Re: DP 7.1 crashes when I press play
Hi guys.
Well, I've erased my disk and reinstalled everything and I think Reason 3 might be causing the crash. Not sure. I managed to get all the IK plugins working ok without crashes. I loaded up Reason thru rewire and have tried routing it into aux and audio tracks and it crashes DP each time.
Seems to be Reason causing the problems, not Amplitube 3 as I thought.
Any other ideas?!

Re: DP 7.1 crashes when I press play
In 7.1 you must have a Reason session open if you have Reason inputs in your DP session or it will crash when you hit play.

That's actually kind of funny.tommymandel wrote:Don't press play...chrisblythenz wrote:Hi

Sorry for your continued troubles Chris. I have been through something like this, where I thought my Amplitube plugins were causing an issue, so I disabled them, then the problem reappeared and it seemed to be another plugin, so I disabled that one. Then the problem reappeared and it seemed to be another plugin.chrisblythenz wrote:Seems to be Reason causing the problems, not Amplitube 3 as I thought.
The only conclusion I can jump to is that the problem is not with the plugins but in the way DP is handling the plugins, or in the way Mac OS is handling the information, or something. It's damn right frustrating.
Make sure you don't have too many instances of VIs in your project. I have projects that crash constantly, and I finally realized that disabling one or more of the loaded VIs brings back stability... and I am not talking about disabling the entire VI from the session... just disabling a second or third instance of the same VI. There appear do be some memory issues going on under the hood.

Re: DP 7.1 crashes when I press play
If you press Pause, and then Play, and then wait a few seconds and then press Pause a 2nd time (''unpausing'' the sequence and initiating playback) does it still crash?
