Monitor not responding to volume control.....

Post by MikeH »

My left monitor isn't responding to the level control on the back of the unit-- I went to listen to some pieces today and noticed that the left monitor was MUCH hotter than the right. When I touched the trim knob on the back of the unit it corrected itself. Now this evening, it seems to just be stuck with the volume at max no matter what I do with the trim knob...

I have an M-audio firewire solo interface and independently powered Tascam VL-A5 monitors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Caig DeOxit or MCL, unless a wire is busted. Caig products are simply brilliant... they put an end to scratchy pots and faders in a jiffy.

Thank you! I removed the back of the monitor and looked at the volume pot...I couldn't see a specific place to spray the stuff--the knob is a small black tube which then enters a small enclosed box that's attached to the board. So I put the back back on and turned it on and played some music...problem still there, but whenever I would gently press in on the knob the sound would return to the correct level that the knob is at..when I'd let up, it'd go back to full volume. Then I turned off the speaker and simultaneously turned the knob back and forth while gently pressing into it (for about 30 sec.). Turned it back on and everything seems fine, so I don't know whether to try and Deoxit tomorrow or not...sounds like all I needed to do was dislodge some stuff, but am a little worried that it might all of a sudden go back and volume surge on me in the middle of a session...

Thanks again!

Pick up that DeOxit regardless... you'll be glad to have it on hand next time a fader or contact acts up on you. Actually, MCL is the preferred product for faders and pots, as it cleans and lubricates... it's KY Jelly for the Audio set.

Ordered what you suggested! (Deoxit Faderlube). Problem was there this morning when I turned everything on--trim knob completely unresponsive. Ended up sitting for about 5 minutes with the monitors on but no signal/music going through them. When I checked again after 5 minutes the problem was gone and the trim knob was working perfectly. I'm a little confused on where to apply the faderlube when I get it...I'm guessing the contact is in the tiny enclosed box that the trim knob is connected to...do I just try and squirt the stuff in there? Maybe I'll take some pictures later and post them...

Thanks again!

Okay, here are a few images. I'd like to know where exactly I need to apply the Deoxit once I get it.

Here's the outside--it's a really small knob:

The inside-- it's the small black tube that's connected with the small blue box right underneath the XLR/TRS input casing...the tiny black dot that's in the center of the blue box is also a part of the volume knob...it moves when I turn the knob. Any ideas on where I need to use the Deoxit?

FWIW: Deoxid spray (the one that does NOT leave any traces) can´t really harm your gear. Just spray into any contact/connection you see and spray the knobs where it´s attached and turn the knob back and forth for a while.
