SSD Boot and Samples?

Post by solar »

I am considering upgrading my laptop. Mac Book Pro 2.4GHz, 4GB Ram. I currently run a couple of SATA external drives for Samples and Recording. With the Advent of the new SSD's I was wondering if should just get a 250 GB SSD. Would I get good performance if I used it as my boot drive and for my Samples? The throughput would suggest that It shouldn't have a hard time reading the samples, but not sure if there are other conflicts. I want to use it as my VI module, and I don't want to have to lug around a bunch of drives. I'll probably just get a duet or something for my interface. It will pretty much only be running Komplete 5/6.

Any insight?
Mac OS 10.6 - Mac Pro 2.66 (6 Raptors all inside) - 8GB Ram - 1X 2408MK3 - 1X 1296 - DP6 - Komplete 5/6 - Melodyne - Drumcore - 1x Euphonix MC Control - 3X MC Mix - Live 7 - Logic 9

Sure you'd get good performance. The 2.5 inch Velociraptors are just as fast (pretty darn close) and cost efficient too... SSD's scream in RAID 0 configurations but the MBP can't do an internal RAID and the externals have the FW bottleneck so your limited.

The Velociraptors don't fit and I'm trying to keep the Firewire bus open for an interface, I may even get an 896HD. Then my express card slot would be open for a UAD solo. So I guess it looks like I may be getting an SSD. Thanks.

They won't huh? Look here. There's a 2.5 inch model. The SSD is a better option but the bang for the buck with the Velociraptor's hard to beat but if you have the $$ by all means go SSD... but the vr's are really hard to beat for a conventional HD.

They're too thick. If you go to barefeats they did a shoot out with the veloci's and some ssd's and other drives. They say it won't fit, as it's not as thin as a conventional 2.5".
