FW HD 828 MKII Daisy Chain

Post by adriano »

Hello forum,
Did a search on this topic and did not find exactly what I was looking for.

I'm on an iMac (see sig).
Is it possible to daisy chain the external FW hard drive with the 828MK2? If so, how do I go about it?

HD-828-FW port on the iMac?
828-HD-FW port on the iMac?

The HD is not used for anything heavy, just MIDI projects and using external gear for them.
Any pros and cons?

Thank you in advance,
Adriano

It works fine and you can chain it either way. Just be aware that the 828 MKII has FW400 ports. If your external HD has FW800 it will bring that speed down to 400 if the 828 is chained to it.

If you have a newer iMac with a single FW 800 port then that's the reality, but I've had the 828 chained with 5 or more drives and it's been just fine.

If you've got a newer single FW bus Mac like my new 27" then you should really look this.

The Newertech Ministack is great. This model is a 1 terabyte drive with a built in FW800, FW400, eSATA and USB hub for $200. This is a great way to get a Time Capsule and the extra FW inputs for the new iMacs.

Hi jimagine and thanks for the reply.
I have the imac 24", 3.06 GhZ and has an FW 800 port, which, I had to purchase the FW 800-400 cable adaptor in order to run the 828MK2. The port on the external drive is FW 400 also and 1 usb, but the usb ports on the imac are taken.

One last question if I may:
Does the 828MK2, needs to be ON in order to mount the external HD?

BTW
Thanks for the link you posted. It looks interesting

I'm assuming that there's a 2nd FW port on the drive, in which case you can do either. The 828 will run right off of that port regardless of whether the drive is mounted or turned on. The HD will likely need the AC adapter powered up but not the drive itself.

But just try that: FW>HD>828MKII. Remember you can chain a number of other drives and FW devices in there as well - but if you want FW800 speed then the Newertech is the only solution to carry both FW800 and FW400 on a new iMac.

Yes, there are 2 FW400 ports on the HD and followed your instructions on the last post. It works beautifully. The other reason I had asked, is that I was concerned on overloading the one port on the mac, but I guess there's nothing to worry about.

I thank you for your help and prompt replies. They are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Adriano
