Anyone using these Drives?

Post by Frodo »

Iomega Ultramax?

Seems that they're late in the design game, since G-Tech started right off making drives to match the G5s and MacPros.

However, I've not heard anything (good or bad) about Iomega lately. If the truth be told, I thought they were no longer around--- sort of like Ensoniq.

Anyway, they're good looking, if nothing else. Any word on reliability?

Haven't heard anything about um, but man... I just would buy anything with Iomega on it anymore... The Dual drive enclosure on the right is very similar to some of the OEM drive enclosures I have seen around. I'm thinking that Iomega is just putting their name on some nice enclosures here.

Wonder whose drives are inside the boxes...?

They'd probably serve ya' just fine. HDs are truly commodities these days.

Hi Frodo,

I haven't used them, but as an FYI this is the direction I'm considering with regards to external HD expansion:

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-dri ... ack_Mount/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
MacPro5,1 2012, six core 2 x 3.06, 10.12.5, Digital Performer 9.13, 40 gb ram, 828mkIII, 2408 mkII, MTP AV, Logic Pro X 10.3.1, Studio One v 3.2, Pro Tools 12.7.1

How well do you like it kgdrum? I was thinking of going with the rackmount solution because I have open rackspace and it's less desktop/floor clutter.

they are very good,hot swappable.
I have them 2 enclosures(2 drives in each)sitting on top of my G5 and they do the job.
When I upgrade to a Macintel I can add a new PCIE card and they will work with my newer Mac.

Yeah... did you mean would or wouldn't? I can't tell whether you are in support of this product or skeptical of it.

They definitely look nice! Would go perfect with my MacPro and the identical-looking G5 that I have stacked on top of it. I could raise the height on my double-Mac tower!

I had one of those iomega 500gb steel cage drives that you see far left in the pic, failed after about a year, at a really bad time as well.

just my 2 cents.

Aaah I remember Jaz Drives ! My Emu E5000 library was on Zips, they served me well.
Haven't used the Iomega hard drives. At work, for video storage, we'd use G-Techs everytime.

+1 on the G-Tech drives. I have 3 500gb Q-drives, been using heavily for 2 solid years and couldn't be happier. very fast, look great, built like a tank. they're the cadillacs of hd's....imho. :)
