Can you mute MIDI notes without cutting them?

Post by beautypill »

I know you can mute audio, but can you mute MIDI notes within a sequence?

I want the notes to stay visible, but "greyed out" and muted.

Is there a way to do that?

...he only wants to mute certain notes within the track. not the entire track.

No. There is no way to do this in DP. It is a very popular feature request.

There is a way of muting individual hits with the drum editor. The name "drum editor" is misleading as any MIDI track, melodic or otherwise, can be edited within this window.
Select your MIDI track, then select drum editor and all your "hits" (MIDI notes) will be listed sequentially on the left. Each one will have a blue play button. You can toggle on/ off here.
Of course it will mute all instances of that hit in that track but it does give a certain level of flexibility.
It's a great way of instantly trying out different melodic patterns.

Hello forum!
Yes, what grouse said. Now if you want only some of the notes/hits muted, select them, go to Region menu>Change Velocity>from the dropdown menu select>Set>check>On Velocity and type in the field "0". click OK

I think the easiest way to do this is to create a MIDI track with no output assigned then use split notes or drag then notes you want to mute in the overview to this "dummy" track. Hope that helps.

Is this a feature request or an honest inquiry? You really didn't know that you can't do this? I would think you would have known that. Put that down as a feature request I suppose, but as some have complained, no the Mute Tool does not mute MIDI notes... yet. Maybe some day.

What I do is duplicate the take and then experiment on a duplicate and have alternate version on each take if I wish.

I think that was the point. No... it does not yet do that.

Someone basically described what I do already, but let me take it a step further. In my sequences I always have a scratch track. That's standard. If I need more than one scratch track, I'll select the scratch track and "add similar" for as many times as I need. Instead of selecting notes and clicking them with a mute tool, I just select the ones I want muted then go to the Tracks Overview Window and drag them to the Scratch Track. When I'm ready to put them back in, it's unbelievably easy to drag one note, several notes, or the entire Scratch Track back to the original track. I really don't think there's a lot of difference in the amount of effort it takes. Using Split Notes can make it even easier, as it will create your scratch track while moving the notes for you.

The notes still show up in the MIDI Graphic Edit Window, so you can still work with it as though it never left the track. Want to hear it without putting it back? Just select a MIDI channel.

To everybody: Sorry I asked this question and then forgot I asked it and didn't come back to check responses. This is a classic internet faux-pas and I apologize.

To James: ?? I'm not sure if you're addressing me in your response but I don't use MIDI a whole lot. Or I don't really edit MIDI a whole lot, I guess. My band Beauty Pill is working on the score for a play and I'm finding it difficult to audition different melodic concepts. I like to subtract a lot. The music is supposed to have a shadow-dappled, unstable, slightly hall-of-mirrors quality. You can see a trailer made out of internal/heuristic rehearsal footage by clicking here.

That sort of music just shouts out "Song Window" to me, Beautypill. You can create individual elements in short sequences, or select them from a longer sequence and drag them to the Chunks Window, where they become pieces you can re-arrange, stack, overlap, or whatever, in the Song Window. You might be interested in giving that a try if you haven't already. Remember this one thing about the song window: it's not an end, it's a tool, a means for arranging things, then you pop your new arrangement back out of the Song Window and into a new sequence. As soon as you've arranged things where you want them in the Song Window, you select them all and create a new sequence from it. You can keep going back and forth as long as you wish. There's more, but you can learn about it in the Song Window chapter in the manual.

Just sayin'...

Sorry about that. I assumed you knew the Mute Tool did not yet work on MIDI notes. I agree it would be helpful. I've had to work around this in the past just by using multiple takes in a MIDI track and having different versions of the takes. I know some suggested you could change velocity to 0 on particular notes, but it seems that might get very confusing.

Song window. Now there's something I've never used and from which I could probably benefit.
I always have bits of ideas, takes, sequences all over the place within a project and it tends to slows me down. I'm not very good at discarding things completely even if the track has developed considerably.
The song window could be my friend. Thanks, Shooshie.

assign CC#11 (so-called "expression") to 127 at the top of the track, then assign it to 0 when you want to MUTE, then back to 127 at the next in-point.
