Tubes for a Tube Mic

Post by jrech »

I have a mxl 76T tubes mic and I was looking to put a new tube in it. Doing a little research, I figured out that some put a 12at7 and some use a 12ay7. I also saw there is a 12au7. Can someone help shed some light on the differences between the 12at7, 12ay7, and the 12au7. Which tube would be best for the mxl 76t.

Thanks,

Jody

All of these tubes are "dual triodes," two circuits packaged in one tube.
So the stock transformer in that chinese mic will probably get a bit hot so I'd stay with what's stock unless you go with a mod of some sort...
I have all my mics custom voiced for what I need by this gentleman: http://www.oktavamod.com/
He would be the one who could really get in depth about why or if you should... but if your mic is stock, the transformer and capsule in there won't make that big of a difference.
That mic is a PERFECT candidate for a mod and they'll kick some serious ass when he's through with it. There are more factors to a mic sounding the way it does... not only the tube but the way the capsule takes the load and the transformers headroom etc. all have something to do with the overall voicing. But it won't hurt to put any of those in. The 12AY7 induces a bit more top but you really don't want a sibilant tube mic... especially the MXL... they already have too much.
If you like what you've been getting out of it, you would most likely get the best results to stay with what came stock.
