The DP7 DAE First Reports Thread
I thought creating a separate thread would be helpful for those of us using DP & DAE
DP7 in theory should have all it's DAE issues from 6 fixed, I'm currently on OS 10.4.11 running PT 7.3.1.. Curious to hear first reports from DAE users. It might be (finally) be time for me to upgrade to Leopard and PT8...

Re: The DP7 DAE First Reports Thread
Hi
I´m wondering if it will work
I´m so disappointed with DP6 and DAE, now I´ll be very careful
So who will be so brave and upgrade ?

Re: The DP7 DAE First Reports Thread
Trying it now guys. Just got it this afternoon and installed in my leopard boot with PT8. I'll post back later.
One thing I've come across right off the bat is an issue with MOL, got to sort that out first.

Re: The DP7 DAE First Reports Thread
OK...off to a little bumpy start, but things are looking pretty good. I had an issue with MOL, but just figured out a way around it, and actually, it's probably better this way anyway. You need to go into the bundles and assign a device to each MOL port. That's different than in 5.13. Not sure if that was the case in DP6 as I hardly ever used it. The good news is that you can shorten the name down to what ever you want (personally I hate the long " MOLover LAN CP MIDI 1: xxxxx" that use to come up in the MIDI assign. It pushed everything over using up valuable space.
I've been pulling up various plugs. The TC plugs which are a staple of my rig, the MD3 and Vss3 both work now - those DID not work at all in DP6. Also, you can bus to a track and record. Pretty much all the plugs I use are coming up and working. I haven't gone through all of the them, but so far so good. The only TDM plugs that don't seem to work are Digi's AIR plugs. So far none of them work, but no biggie for me cuz I never use them anyway. They don't crash DP, just come up deactivated. All the other Digi plugs do work, Xpand2, minigrand, moogerfooger, etc.
I haven't actually tried it locked to picture yet. That's coming up next.
Kontakt, Altiverb, Amplitube etc all work. And all my eq's, comps etc are all working. Massey, Autotune, Oxford, McDSP, Sonalksis, PSP, URS etc. Multi mono is working as well.
Important safety tip: if you use the surround mixer plug in your DAE set up, as I do and many others do, you'll have to go back to the stereo mixer or dithered stereo mixer plug. I had that in and forgot that DP has an issue using that. Once I switched that out with the stereo, everything was peachy.
I think this version is going to do it for me. I still need to run it under a load and locked to picture, but it looks good.
I'm going to install DP7 on my tiger / DAE7 boot where my DP5 currently runs and see how it does there as well.
I say dive in boys....the water is fine.

Re: The DP7 DAE First Reports Thread
Whew sigh of relief with that report... many thanks tripit, you saved me a panic attack with the MOL setup..
Are you now switched over to BWAVE, or AIFF for recording in DP, or still SD2?
I remember reading something on the DUC about jittery, or sluggish quicktime performance in PT8. I'll have to search the boards over there to see if that was a PT8.0 issue, or just an individual system anomaly for some. Let us know how that works out..
Thanks again Tripit, much appreciated!

The test session I just did was BWAVE. Good riddance to SD2 now that Dp7 is here.Christopher Drake wrote:Whew sigh of relief with that report... many thanks tripit, you saved me a panic attack with the MOL setup..

Re: The DP7 DAE First Reports Thread
Loaded up DP7 on my tiger 10.4.11 / DAE 7.4 and opened a fairly large score I've been working on. I'm happy to report that DP7 is running flawlessly. No issue with MOL, it just shows up like it did on 5.13. I have about 17 gigs used, most in Kontakt with the rest in VSL ensemble, so this is a heavy load on the VI side. My template has about 200 tracks in it and this particular session has 3 orchestral cues in it.
Works great so far, just like 5.13. No hassles, nothing to tweak. I just installed DP7 and opened the session.
I have to say that I think this may be the best release that MOTU has put out since 5.13, maybe even better, maybe the best they've ever put out, but need some time to see if that's true. One thing for sure, it seems that they address most if not all the issue that plagued us earlier. This is the first time I've been able to use all the DAE features since 4.72 - and that has been a loooooong wait.

Re: The DP7 DAE First Reports Thread
thanks tripit for your report
that sounds very good, so I think I´ll gonna order the upgrade today
one more thing .. is it possible to make numerical edits in a tdm-plug window (f.e. digi eq) ?
that was broken in DP6, but only with tdm plugs, with rtas-plugs there was no problem
thanks again

My rig is tied up with an install at the moment. But, later when I pull up a session I'l check that for you.tonwurm wrote:thanks tripit for your report

Re: The DP7 DAE First Reports Thread
Man, I can't tell you guys how thrilled I am. I was worried that I was going to have to move all my orchestral scoring to PT8 or gasp...Logic if DP7 didn't work. That probably would have been the end of DP for me and was pretty much a nightmare, because nothing beats DP for large MIDI sessions and scoring. When you have 200 tracks of MIDI in PT8 it's really difficult on workflow. I like PT8 a lot for working on songs, albums and such but not for scoring. Now, I can stick with DP as my main rig and only use PT for smaller stuff. Now I just have to get used to all the changes coming from DP5.
Thank you MOTU!

im glad to hear that it´s workin now for you
I´ve ordered the upgrade but here in germany it will last a while until it´s shipped - but after 1 year of waiting those few days won´t matter

Re: The DP7 DAE First Reports Thread
Well, been using DP7 in leopard now for a few days and it's been really stable and everything is working great. It's been excellent. The only issue I've come across so far has to do with VE Pro - I know, two new apps at the same time, what was I thinking?
When you have VE Pro, the slave can have multi MIDI ports. 8 is the default. DP sees and functions with the ports just fine except that there is an issue with the naming of the ports. DP doesn't distinguish the different ports coming from a particular instance. It gives you 8 or however many ports you have assigned to VE all with the name of the instance followed by 1-16 MIDI channels. No port number. So you have guess which one is 1,2,3 etc. You can count them, because they are in order, but that is a pain.
Also, if you send multi stereo pairs back to DP, it is one set off from the slave. So out 3/4 on the slave comes in 5/6 on DP. If you assign the input in DP to 3/4 you'll hear nothing.
Which brings up another possible related issue. One instance of VE in my slave works great. I loaded up a huge kontakt template of LASS strings and ran it through VE Pro. Other than the MIDI and audio port naming issues, it works great. But, I pulled up another instance of VE in the slave with a very small load and DP went nuts. Looped audio, dropped clock, hit play would jump ahead 2000 bars, everything went completely nuts. Never seen anything like it. As soon as I dumped the 2nd instance and rebooted, everything has been fine since.
I think the issue may be related to the other ones. That is, DP isn't able to properly distinguish multi VE Pro instances coming from the same slave. It has a problem distinguishing multi MIDI ports and the audio channels within a single instance, so I think it might also have an issue with two instances coming from the same slave. Nothing to support this other than a logical hunch.
The work around for me is to keep to a single instance of VE Pro on any given slave. It's no means ideal, but until MOTU can address the handling of multi VI ports and inputs in RTAS better, I have no choice. I would be interested to see if the regular DP users run into the same issues with AU. Although, something tells me that we may be alone in this issue.
On another note: Digi just put out a pre-release for PT8 and SL. It looks to be a bit iffy. Some people are having good luck, but some aren't. If I can find some space to create a another boot drive, I might give it a go.
A final thought, with DP7 now working really well with DAE, I can't see why more PT users won't want to take advantage of DP. Logic is in no way even close to being this DAE friendly (it's horrible actually) and PT8 pales big time when it comes to all things MIDI. Once things have settled and people see that DP is now working really well with DAE, I think we'll start to see a lot more DP DAE users.
