Mach 5 II with PT 8

Post by conleycd »

Hey folks,

Is anyone running Mach 5 II with PT 8 HD with a PPC? I'm planning to reinstall from my OS 10.4 to my 10.5 setup with PT8 HD.

Also, I'm wondering where people would recommend putting the samples. Currently I have a record disk and a system disk. Ideally, I'd love an Intel Computer with a system disk, 2 recording disks, and a samples disk - not so lucky just yet.

So... where would you put the samples for Mach 5 - system disk or recording disk?

Thanks.

I wouldn't bother. MachFive 2 does not run with Protools 8, or 7 for that matter. It will open, but it will cause you nothing but grief. CPU overload, crashes...etc. MOTU is well aware of the problem for over a year now, and has done nothing about it. So much for standing behind your product. boo... MOTU.

Good luck -

Just last week the MOTU phone support guy acknowledged that Mach 5 2 does not work with ProTools 7.4 and later (except if you use it in standalone mode which I have not explored). I'm still in 7.3.1 and it works ok.

Yikes... pretty shameful to make an RTAS that doesn't run with Protools.

So in standalone mode - could you use Rewire to get audio into PT?

I've actually never used Rewire before. Hmmmm.

The MachFive app doesn't support ReWire, so you'd need to use another method of piping MIDI from PT into MachFive and audio from MachFive into PT. The IAC bus should work fine for sending MIDI, but since PT doesn't support regular Core Audio drivers you can't use Soundflower or JACK to send audio back into PT. The only option I can think of would be to use a physical loopback, e.g. choose your UltraLite as MachFive's audio device, send MachFive's output to the UltraLite's S/PDIF output, then connect that to your 96 I/O's S/PDIF input.
"I don't see any method at all, sir."

Hmmm... thanks that's very helpful.

It may be end up being that I dedicate my aging dual G5 to be a synth host and pump that into a new Mac Intel using ADAT (I think) now that Apple has made my G5 a legacy product (as has Digidesign).

I do find it a little funny that Apple mocked Microsoft for making hardware incompatibilities with Vista (like a video card or something) when I have to now invest $3000 to replace my Mac to make it current with their new operating system.

Microsoft would be wise to pick up on that one.
