Firewire output muting

I have some MOTU PRE8's and a 896 mk.III. On my old G4 Tiger everything works perfect but on my MacBook Leopard the output often mutes and a complete restart is sometimes necessary to restore it (Inputs keeps working). I have tried 10.5.6 and 10.5.7 but that didn't make any difference. Has anyone experienced the same problem? And solved it! Can it be a firewire chipset problem?
