896HD not found on firewire bus

Post by JPreiss »

Hi folks,
My ageing PC (XP/SP3) regularly fails to find my 896 on the firewire bus; slight variations in that FW audio console sometimes seems to make partial (although non-functional) contact, displaying incomplete info, other times says that the device hasn't been found, and yet other times displays an error 22.

Otherwise the Firewire seems to be more or less OK; have a WD drive that occasionally doesn't show up, but nothing that a quick switch off-and-on doesn't fix ...

Deeply irritating - any help enormously appreciated!

Computer: Dell Dimension DIM4500 | P4 2.26Ghz | 1GB RAM | XP Home SP3
Firewire: VIA OHCI Compliant Host Controller in PCI Slot 2 Driver version 5.1.2535.0
Audio Hardware: MOTU 896HD | TC Electronic Powercore Firewire x2

It sounds like it's a connection issue.
- Try using a different firewire port on your computer
- Try using a dfferent firewire port on you MOTU
- Try using a different firewire cable all-together (especially if you are using one that is 15 feet or longer)

If it were a driver/software issue, the MOTU would either it would be found or it wouldn't. The intermittent nature of our MOTU seems to indicate connection problem.
