Slowdown in making selections in Quickscribe (DP6.02)

Post by eidco »

I've looked around and can't find anyone else mentioning this.

I'm noticing that after working in Quickscribe for a while (half hour or so), things start to really slow down. For instance, just lassoing some notes in Quickscribe will take longer and longer...up to 10 seconds for the notes to become selected. Even after the notes show being selected, there's an additional pause before actions like duration or quantizing.

The solution is to save, quit and reopen DP6.02. Then things will be snappy for a while before gradually slowing down again. One task I do often with DP is MIDI transcription. The process is to quantize note attacks and releases to prepare a MIDI file for import into Finale. This involves the use of Quickscribe and the graphic editor (as well as the tracks window). I've been doing this type of work for over 10 years with Performer and 6.02 is the first one to exhibit this problem. I'm using a Mac Pro with OS X Leopard. The same problem exist on my wife's non-Intel Leopard system.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?

Thanks,
John Eidsvoog

One other thing that might be a factor....both systems with the problem have 3 monitors, a 30" in the middle (2560x1600) and a 21" portrait (1200x1600) on the left, which is where the Quickscribe window is. Maybe DP has a hard time with all that screen memory.

Sure seems like a memory leak.

I was very excited to start working in 6.02. Heard they had fixed the bugs and it was stable. But this sluggishness is impossible to work with. It's really bad in MIDI, but i can't imagine trying to record musicians. Is it only caused by Quickscribe window? Or are there still memory leaks program-wide? Is anyone successfully working up to speed in DP6.02? I sure hope they fix it. It was fun while it lasted.....

Hi John- do you still have DP 5.13 on your system? If so, try that and see if it also slows down. If it doesn't, then it must be a problem in 6.02. I'm still using 5.13 as it's just running so dang well on my system but also maybe check with Rick G as I know he's using 6.02 for MIDI transcription and doesn't seem to be having problems. It could be an issue with multiple monitors- I think I read somewhere here that others were having troubles with dual monitors. Please report back if you figure it out.
Thanks!

Hi Frank! :) If you remember where you heard that I'd be interested. DP 6 has not been nice to me and I am using dual monitors as well, although I haven't seen any graphics issues other than the yucky GUI. LOL.

thanks for the reply - i don't have multiple monitors (although I am using the same keyboard and mouse to operate another mac, but not on a switcher - it's a wireless app). Running 5.13 is smooth - it's the most stable version of DP I've ever had. Some friends think perhaps my VIs in the Vrack are hogging too much memory. We are going to try installing more memory, running the VIs in Plogue Bidule on the same computer. A colleague of mine is having great luck with that setup.....

I'm having the same memory-leak-style problem in QuickScribe in 6.02 but not in 5.1.

Another problem I have in 6.02 but not in 5.1 is Quickscribe's oversensitivity to the duration one plays (or edits graphically) a note. While I can't find in either version of DP a way to set the notation to be more or less sensitive to played duration, 5.1 pretty much reads my mind and allows me to play (or edit), for example, a whole note a little long or a little short but it still renders it in notation as a whole note. 6.02 renders anything shorter or longer that perfect to show 32nd notes/rests, etc.

This will pretty much a show stopper for me. I'm hopefully one of you will know a way to set up Quickscribe in 6.02 to respond to played/edited notes as it did in 5.1.

I upgraded to 6 because I thought that the pre-rendering feature would allow me to use more synth instances. In fact, I'm getting fewer.

Also, I'm disappointed that the position bar seems to have disappeared in 6.02 and that the metronome skips a bit at the beginning of playback.

I will continue for a few days with 6.02 but if there are no solutions for these issues, I'll go back to 5.1 till there's an upgrade.

I've now upgraded to 7.1 and the overly sensitive notation is still a problem. I liked the algorithm in 5.1 and before for when Quickscribe would round up to a whole or half note, etc.

I hope someone at MOTU is paying attention to this. It was a deal-breaker for me before in 6.0 and I backed out to 5.1, but now that I've upgraded to an 8-core I'm stuck with 7.1.

Help!!! My scores look terrible, but they play back right.
