NR Workflow

Post by rlinsurf »

I have about an hour long track recorded live, where the track was recorded way down in the mud. I need to run heavy NR on it, and have a bunch of Waves and the plugins which come with DP to sweeten afterwards. Specifically as far as Waves go, I have z-noise and the restoration package. Then I have the normal set of EQ's from them and DP.

Can someone suggest what my chain should look like, i.e., should I try to boost the sound as much as possible before the NR or after? EQ before or after, etc.?

BTW, this is all for DP 6.0.2.

Thanks.

If you can improve the track with EQ first, and raise the overall gain (if necessary) that would be best. NR can be phase-y in the highs, so you need to hear what's there to begin with before potentially masking something that could be salvaged. Using a low pass filter in front of your NR plugs when you are isolating a noise profile can also help keep the highs intact.

I use Izotope RX for this sort of thing, not the Waves plugs, so I can't be very specific.

Hope that helps.

How is that, BTW? I'm actually liking z-noise quite a bit -- but it does have a lot of artifacts.

Thanks for the workflow. I'll definitely be trying that.

I like RX very well. I think there is a free demo of the basic version, which is what I have.

Yep, RX all the way here. They imply the workflow, but I save each step as 32-bit anyway, in case I find individual plugs that do a better job of any one task and want to redo the finals. TC Electronic had a different workflow recommendation for their suite, but they have lots of overlap as well.

I like being able to use a lower-resolution setting for quick verification of problem zones, but be aware that your final result may be quite different from early testing using the simple settings. Some of the more advanced settings are overnight batch jobs, so this plug-in truly approaches hardware quality.

There was a note earlier about standalone mode vs. plug-in mode, but I have those notes elsewhere and don't remember the conlcusion, other than that it was "unexpected". I have personally been using it exclusively in standalone mode of late, as that at least frames my mind differently from mastering or mixing.
