Another problem with an 828mkII Firewire

I just bought a used 828mkII FW to be used with Cubase 5. I have an inspiron 8600 running Windows XP SP3.
The problem is that whatever run connected to the 828 hangs 3 seconds, works 1 second, hang again, work again, and so on,
and the audio follows the same pattern.
To be sure that it was not a problem of configuration with Cubase, i trying with the CueMix console in isolation,
and got the same result, and i tried it with just a Kontact player II running Garritan Jazz Band. Same thing,
the sampler freeze for three second (including MIDI input), then work a second or two, than freeze and so on.

The unit did not came with the software CD, so i downloaded the software version 3.6.8 from the motu site.
The laptop have a TI chip, and for what i read around is known to works with the 828, so i don't think it is a firewire
chip problem.

Any suggestion ?
