Is there a way to do this?

Post by tshaps »

I do a fair amount of editing by hand of continuous data in the Graphic Editor. For example, I'll tweak the ramp of mod wheel move by drawing it in. And I tweak different types of controller data-- sometimes mod wheel, sometimes breath control, expression, etc. One of the very few things that bug me about DP is that I find it a little clunky that to switch between editing these kinds of data I have to select the controller I want to edit with the grid view filter (using my mouse) instead of being able to toggle between views of individual controllers from my QWERTY keyboard. I feel like I could save a lot of time if I could quickly select a controller from the keyboard. Unless...

Is there a way to do this that I don't know about? If anyone has a thought I'd appreciate it.

Many thanks.

Only with QuicKeys, and even then it's not a beginner move. But you can make it work with trial and error as you figure out how to use QuicKeys.

i'm bringing this back up to see if anyone has found a way (via quickkeys or any another way) of being able to switch what kind of continuous controller data you're editing in the "grid view filter" (p. 369 of the DP 7 manual). the grid view filter appears in the bottom left-hand corner of the MIDI editing window, just to the right of where you select between points/bars/lines for your data display mode. it allows you to show/edit data for just one controller (including on velocities, pitch bend, etc.) at a time or all of them at once.

i searched for commands (keyboard shortcuts) for both the quick filter and also for what the OP was asking about and neither of these are available via commands. like the OP, i also spend a bunch of time editing cc data for orchestral mockups (cc# 1, 2, 7, 11, 83, 111, on velocities, etc.) and it would be HUGE if i could have keyboard shortcuts (that i can then program into my xkeys professional) to be able to toggle between these. it's a drag having to use the mouse so much when doing this.

anybody have any ideas short of the obvious (requesting the feature directly from motu)?

Bumping this post again. Is DP8 going to address this issue? Is quick keys the only solution currently? Can we please get MOTU onboard to get key commands to toggle between the controller views. Logic's got it. seems a no brainer... what a drag it is, pun intended, having to constantly be selecting through the pull down menu. i'm also on orchestral mock ups all the time, and constantly switching between 7,1,11.. drives me mad. any other solutions out there?
thanks

I realise this is probably not the answer you're looking for but in the Sequence editor just clicking on an edit point will bring it up for editing and show you on the left hand side exactly what it is you're editing. No need for excessive mouse action.
There is a colour scheme too so it gives you some sense of what's what.
I've ditched the Graphic Editor for editing controller information and it's made my life so much easier.
Having said that, I don't do orchestral stuff so no doubt my needs in this department are simpler than yours.

There's no command for this that I've found. What grouse says about clicking on the control points to change active layer certainly works, but those points can be too tiny to click on easily sometimes, so I often find myself reverting to the mouse. I'd like to know how commands could be implemented in this case because the values in the list can dynamically change. For MIDI tracks there are 128 controllers. Maybe a preference for favorites with commands attachable. I find using groups to change active layer and set cc for all members helpful. Create New Group from selected tracks has a command, as well Suspend Grouping and others. I also like "show active layer only", which also has a command. That removes the clutter drastically, but by its nature eliminates the use of changing the layer by clicking on a visible but inactive control point. I'd like to see how those who used quick keys got it too work. Seems there are too many variables in window/note/track sizes to place a click somewhere.

+1. ProTools allows you to select via keyboard shortcut as well. DP is so keyboard shortcut centric, it's a surprising omission.

Man, this used to be an old annoyance of mine, but following a few respected members' suggestions, I got Quickeys and let me tell you it is a JOY to edit all that stuff with it.
I basically bought Quickeys to improve the MIDI editing you are talking about (I spend a lot of time doing this everyday).

It has improved my workflow like a 1000% percent! No more constant trips with the mouse down there.
I made a QK shortcut for every CC I need. I press 2 keys and Bam! The CC changes in a second. This, along with similar shortcuts to control the drawing tools (reshape flavor, etc.) and the QuickView filter is amazing.

Spend the 60 bucks! I assure you it will be one of the best investments you'll make.
If you are still not convinced, look at some of Tripi's videos demoing how he uses QKs with DP 8)

Hey FM, could you post a screenshot or list of the steps you use? I can't seem to get QK to select the edit layers.

It will be my absolute pleasure to do so.
I actually shamelessly ripped off some of Tripi's QK routines and adapted them to my setup.

I promise you will be VERY happy with this :)
It's amazing how much time one saves, especially if you need to edit CCs like crazy.

I'll post a few screenshots in a couple of hours, when I get back to the studio.

You could also export the shortcut and email it to me.

OK FM, you've convinced me to get QuickKeys because this is something that I've wanted for ages. A 'favourite controllers' shortcut as mentioned Frank F would be a great solution if implemented by MOTU.

Cool!

You'll love it!

I will post my current QK file here for those of you who wxnt to take a look at the changing CC routines.
Tripi did that for me and it was a huge help to start figuring the app out.

Ill do it the moment power is restored in my block hopefully nobt later than tomorrow.

Aaargh my fingers are too fat to type om my iphonr.

Quickeys may not yet be Lion compatible!

Let the buyer beware!
