Here's where to talk about preamps, cables, microphones, monitors, etc.

No "direct out" on Motu 8Pre - work around is ?

Post by mboxx »

- We see there is no "direct out" for each of the 8-input channels on the 8pre's

- We wanted to route each instrument or mic directly to the 8preinput jacks
- So they went directly into the computer for recording with out any effects
- We will add effects as necessary later

- Then we wanted to take the "direct out" and send that to a mixer
- so that we could send audio with effects to the performers head sets

- Or we wanted to take the "direct out" and send that back to the performers amps
- LIke when recording a live event

Since the Motu 8pre's do not have a direct out for each input channel... How would you guys do this?

Thanks for any help.

Use the ADAT optical outputs.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Since I'm a newbie to this... what would we connect the ADAT optical out to?

Is there a device that would take that and give us 8 output jacks or connectors?

If so what device or devices?

Thanks for the help.

The only way I've recorded live shows with my MOTU 828 is by taking the direct out of the Front of House mixer, plus some of my own dedicated recording mics plugged straight into the 828. It's lame because you get whatever the FOH mixer sends you, and he may futz with the trim knob too much, but what are you going to do?

I don't know a FOH engineer who would trust me to plug the stage mics into my gear before heading to the FOH mixer. Usually the Sound Reinforcement setup takes much higher priority than the recording setup and we're not worth the risk if our gear fails.

I still don't know how you can do what you want to do with an 8pre anyway.

It sounds like InputOutput is suggesting in his post that we take the ADAT output from the 8pre and connect it to some device that will take ADAT in and give you 8 audio outputs. My question is... what device would that be?

Thanks for any more comments.

I have a Behringer ADA8000, and it would do what's required. I've used the outputs on mine sparingly, and I was not terribly impressed with the sound, but it was acceptable. It's probably about as cheap a solution as you're going to find. A MOTU 828 would be a potential solution, too. You can probably get a used MKII on Ebay or craigslist for $300 bucks or so, and you'd get another couple of mic pres in the process.
