Playback buffer peaking.
I'm on Tiger and DP 5.13 on a quad core with 6.6 gigs of RAM. NOt a lot of edits at ALL. the playback buffer keeps peaking and tracks stop playing. My buffer is set to 1024.
PLEASE help. i have clients in and i can't get 15 seconds of playback before it starts dropping tracks. whats the deal? anyone know?

6.6 gb of ram? Sounds strange...

Re: Playback buffer peaking.
Need more information.
For the setup you describe, that is entirely abnormal. Are there any background processes at work? Other applications open? Dashboard? How many tracks? How much automation? What plugins are involved? Are you running a lot of VI's?
In other words, review every possible thing that could be taking up CPU time and/or RAM space, and let's see what could be causing this.

Re: Playback buffer peaking.
ditto 6.6 gb ram sounds strange......
Is this apple ram? I have seen problems before caused by aftermarket ram.

Re: Playback buffer peaking.
Sorry ... 5.667 Gigs of RAM.
At any rate, there are NO other apps open. Dashboard has no widgets. NO background processing. I even MERGED all the existing tracks so there would be no edits/fades to compute.
I'm completely baffled cause my PPC G5 runs WAYYYY better than this performance. The CPU performance of the QUAD CORE isnt even at 25%, but the playback buffer will peak like heck!
any help?

Re: Playback buffer peaking.
I have the FW drive in the front FW buss. Could that be the issue? Are the rear busses faster?

Re: Playback buffer peaking.
Are all those tracks on a firewire drive? If so try moving the project to an internal dedicated audio drive.

Re: Playback buffer peaking.
thats never been an issue. I've had hundreds of projects with just as many or more tracks when using my PPC G5. This is supposed to a quad core an BLAZING fast. and its not ...

Re: Playback buffer peaking.
Wonder, the ram calculation is still strange!! 5.6 gb?
Please, open your system profiler and report the results at voice "memory";
perhaps your Mac have a problem on reading the dimms...
I tried Mac Pro 2.66 (now I have 2xquad 2.8ghz) and absolutely no problem whit projects more hard than in your snapshot...
You updated the driver of interface?

Re: Playback buffer peaking.
How full is your FW drive?
Have you turned off warning when audio overloads processor and pre fill buffers?
I wonder if your FW drive could be fragged?
Very strange wonder

Re: Playback buffer peaking.
KASS....i thought of all that too ... the drive isnt close to being full. And doesnt OSX defrag drives automatically?
but heres the strange thing ... when I opened another song (with few tracks. not MANY fewer, but fewer nonetheless), the playback buffer was fine. But when i'm doing edits, comping, heavy resource stuff ... this computer is just not flexing its muscle! I tried deleting VI tracks to try and free up CPU.
I'm not sure what the heck is going on but why is my PPC G5 kicking this QuadCores AS*????

Do you have anything else running on the FW buss?wonder wrote:KASS....i thought of all that too ... the drive isnt close to being full. And doesnt OSX defrag drives automatically?

I'd try running it off the internal Drive.
I know my pro tower doesn't like some FW drives (well one so far)
I have 2 drives in the tower and one setup for audio and it workin better than my Sarotech FW800 drive used to.
How many VI's are you running?
