Mixing/output advice

Post by brohank »

I'm a newbie...so treat me gently. I need a little (actually a whole lot) of advice.

I'm running a 2408 out of Mac, OS9, with output tracks going to a Studiomaster Diamond 8 track board. The final mix is then output to a Sony MiniDisc, which I then have to dump to a PC that has a wave studio so that I can then burn to a CD. One of the major probs with this is that the output from the MiniDisc into the Wave studio is woefully low...I have to bump the "volume" level as much as 350% to get it up to a reasonable playback level on the CD, and it seems to be inconsistent.

What software or program can I get for the Mac that will allow straight (from the 2408) conversion to wave for burning? Or is that what I need to do?

Any and all advice is appreciated.

My advise is to use your MOTU system all the way and forget about the mini disk!!!!
Route the stereo buss output of the Studiomaster Diamond 8 track board straight back to 2 input channels of the 2408 and record your mix it into DP again. (The same project. Mute these input channels during recording).
Then export the mixed stereo soundbite in the Soundbite window to WAV/AIFF/MP3 format, or whatever format you want. Or Bounce To Disc.
In this way you use the A/D converters of the MOTU 2408 and do not get the converted poored mini disk audio quality and other problems u mentioned.
Then burn the exported mix soundbite file to a CDR in your MAC (using a program like Toast) or in case you have no CD burner in your MAC, move the file with an USB stick to your PC.

definately agree on the routing, I do that with Pro Tools a lot.

anyhow, for the mac, if your machine is up to it (big G4 / pref G5 / intel) i'd look at getting Logic. you can mix the tracks either in Logic, or back to logic as described above, and export the bounce as a wav / aiff file.

then, Logic comes with Waveburner, so you can master it without going to the PC. Waveburner is all part of the package, you pay nothing extra for it.

Logic works great with MOTU too.
Just remember kiddies, You can't polish a turd.

Thanks to both of you for the info..I'll be trying it. don't think I'm up to Logic, tho, since I'm on a G3, OS 9, 1gig ram. Although I do have it pretty well tweaked, I have noticed a little latency (very little).

You can also just do all your fader/volume moves with DP's automation and then bounce the song to disc.
Save as Aiff or Wave.
I think you can find an early version of iTunes on the Apple web site, archived software download area, one that will work with OS9, and that will let you arrange your songs in a playlist and burn to cd. If you can find an old version of Toast or Jam, they were great in the OS9 versions.

Ofcourse there is a latency! D/A* and A/D* puts for normal convertion reasons some latancy but this should NOT be any problem on a finalmix file..
Thats why I wrote NOT to monitor the inputs during recording.

* A/D Analog to Digital Signal
