828 MKIII latency lower then 1024 not possible?!?

Post by Unox »

Hi people,

Just did a totally clean install (Win XP3) with the latest MOTUdrivers on a mobo with a TI FW chip (Gigabyte X48 DS4) for my recently bought 828MKIII, running Cubase 4.1.

I can't get the latency lower then 1024 samples, if I do the MKIII starts to scream high-pitched tones and/or give dropouts.

I really need low latency to be able to play softsynths.

My CPU is an Q9550... My former machine's cpu was a lowly 1.7Ghz pentium M, I could reach 64 samples with an RME without any problem.

Reading through this forum I notice a lot of trouble concerning the MKIII and WinXP, if there is no easy solution I'd better switch back to RME.

EDIT: Also latest firmware.

mine is giving high pitched sounds whatever the buffer is, but i was able to reach 256 sometimes on really small projects (less then 8 tracks), im using a dual core laptop/TI chipset

i can run mine on 64 samples. that runs a 15 track cubase project 48khz 24bit with many a plugin. i use xp sp3 on an abit p35 chipset + c2d e6400 oc to 3.2ghz. so your machine outspecs mine significantly...

Bizarre. It's a bit of hit & miss what I read of it... My machine is brandnew, did all the IRQtricks, disabled the commports, the works..

Do you have a dedicated FWcard?

its onboard f/w 1394a. i actually did very little when i installed on my current system in terms of preparation. its a pretty messy build that i use for web browsing and gaming. all the reports of failure are worrying me as i have rescently ordered one of the new dell latitude lappys for use with my 828. could be an expensive mistake... :s

Expensive maybe, mistake maybe not. Internet and Gaming do not play well with DAW functions, I run a seperate computer for my DAW. If you must share then ensure you disable those functions not related to the DAW before attempting to record, clearing up resources and those anoying "I'll search the net for updates while your not busy schedulers" Computers no-a-days do not sit idle when they are not in use, that is why it is good to either disable the network card or pull the network cable when using the machine as a DAW. When you are not connected to a network and working basically stand-alone you might even temporarly disable your Virus scanner to ease things along, remember to re-enable before reconnecting to the network.

csprague, thats exactly my intention for the new lappy. keep it tidy and not use it for anything else. i dont know if you read previous posts but i am having absolutely no problems with my 828, unexpected considering how messy the windows build is.
