external drive enclosure ?sata drives

Post by mgmediaworks »

So i understand the best performance comes from external drives. not internal at all..So i thought about getting a esata card for my mac pro and getting an enclosure to host my audio drive and my sound library drive.. which one are you using.?

I found this card for the mac pro.

$70
http://www.cwol.com/serial-ata/caldigit ... dapter.htm

and this enclosure which is
$160
http://www.granitedigital.com/index.asp ... ProdID=387

oh and for the laptop
$100

i have had a very good experience with http://eshop.macsales.com/search/seritek
made well, works, lots of bundles and if switching from a G-5 to a Macintel all you need to change is a card.
OWC has lots of options.

So you have filled up the four internal SATA slots already ?

You might wanna take a look at FW3200...

Great people. Great products. We use their enclosures for G5 and MacPros

Internal SATA drive buses on the Mac offer the best data bandwidth on all except the 2008 models where firewire bandwidth is apparently using PCIe buses running at 2.5Ghz. Previous models are still using the 33Mhz fw bus.

It could be that 2008 models have firewire performance comparable to internal SATA, but I've not had the chance to do any comparison tests (because my MacPro is 2007 model!).

So, at best internal SATA is equal to or better than firewire in general just from reading the specs.

With that said, I swore off of firewire a few years ago because of bus clog. All of my audio and sample libraries either run on internal SATA or eSATAII via an eSATAII host card. It works so brilliantly that I couldn't consider going back; at least not on a machine built before January, 2008.

My firewire port is used for backup drives. Otherwise, those drives are only connected when needed to give my Dunede SSL unit all available fw bandwidth.

+1 I used my firewire 400 port for my Tascam interface and sometimes use the FW 800 for an occasional back up but I love SATA. If I had a MacPro I would try cramming 5 or 6 drives in there internally! <Grin> I read somewhere that there's a kit that lets you do it, where you put a couple where the lower optical drive would go and use a the internal sata connector(s).

Yes, of course you need to be mindful of temperature and all that I think it would be nice to have everything all internally.

Thanks for the info Frodo. I had no idea that all those Firewire ports were on the same bus. For some reason I thought at least the FW 400 and 800 were on different busses. No wonder I used to have problems with my interface, a couple FW800 and a FW 400 all chugging away.

Do you use a FireWire or a PCI card based interface?

I did that. It is this thing. I have 6 internal 500G drives. 1 System Disk. One called "Samples" for read-only sample stuff, and 4 grouped into a single striped raid called "Projects" for maximum bandwidth where all the read/write project stuff goes.

I could get two more if I wanted to give up the DVD drive - but then system updates would be a drag and I think this is enough.

Works great. Fans seldom kick in except during system updates. It is much more efficient than the space heater I used to have.

I'm PCIe, definitely.

I'll connect a firewire drive for backing up when needed, but I'll not connect more than one thing at a time to any firewire port. Part of this is that Duende won't mount if something else is connected at the same time.

Love it. I also have UAD-1, so these two cover a lot of ground. I only wish Duende would add more than the current 5 plugins.

I'm using MBP with Traveler hooked up to its internal FW400 port. Duende is daisy chained to Traveler. The system seems to be working fine :-)
