i rencently spoke to a MOTU local distributor, and he said that they don't cover units that have a blown fw port. anyway, apparently FW devices circuits can be damaged when plugin the fw cable when the unit is switched on. it seems a bit exagerated to me but i found many real cases on the net...
he suggest to have both the 828 mk3 and the computer turned off before plugging the cable, but this seems a bit impossible to me, i would have purchased a pci based system instead of fw if i wanted to have my rig connected 24/7... any light on this ?
risk of blowing the FW ports?

The topic is open to opinion as Firewire is listed as hot swapable but it also depends on the device. The best thing to do is ask MOTU not the sales rep. Even the most reliable hot swapable device can pop from a static discharge. I've done mine many times will no ill effects, but it only takes once to ruine your day. I would recommend at least leaving the MOTU device off during plugin thereby not drawing any current.
