Is my 828MKII dying?

Post by sevenone »

I've had my MKII since '05. For a while now I've had an issue that I thought was caused by large projects and CPU/RAM related. But, lately it's been getting worse. I have a dual 2.0 G5, 4Gb Ram, OSX 10.4 (latest before 10.5 came out). When playing a project the sound will begin to turn to distortion static. Light at first, ultimately VERY bad. This used to occur every once and while, and it seemed to happen on larger projects (40 mono audio/16 st buss). Now it's happening every 15 - 30 minutes on even smaller stuff (8-10 mono, 2 active st busses, and EZDrummer). If I turn off the 828, and back on, DP crashes, but the static is gone for a bit. I should say, the static is on any sound, DP, iTunes, System sounds, etc.

Last night was the worst it's been. I got heavy static, pops, then for no reason channels in DP stopped making sound. The meters in DP showd sound moving through, but it was like I was soloing one track. I fiddled around with my controller, muting/soloing various tracks, and it did nothing. Then all of the sudden all the tracks worked, but only on the left side. I shut down and went to bed after that.

Any thoughts?

Mine was not even a year old when it stared that. Since it was under warranty, I received a replacement (be aware, that replacement took over two weeks)
