newbie problem - unable to turn optical input on

Working with the original 828, Windows XP 32, Kontakt - Setting up my studio for the first time - trying to turn optical output on via the MOTU audio console - simply won't let me - if I choose ADAT or TosLink, it immediately returns to the Off selection. Thanks for any help.
