Advice needed on SATA drive...

Post by BKK-OZ »

I need another hard drive for my G5.

I can get a pretty good price on a Western Digital 250Gb Caviar (SATA)

I am assuming that this drive will work, yes?

Stewpid question, I know, but I can't see any confirmation on WD's site.

Yer advice will be most gratefully rec'd

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. For drives, everyone has ones they love and hate. I've had a Western Digital drive up and die on me, but what do I know?

I like the Seagate Barracuda drives. Knock on wood those little things work for me.

just my £0.02 worth.

Thanx for those comments, but I guess what I really need is just plain confirmation that I will be able to use the drive I mentioned in my post

-I assume I will be able to install it, etc.

I just want to know for sure b4 I buy...

BK, go for it. It'll be fine. I've installed dual 160GB WD SATA in a G4 1.4 using a Sonnet Tempo SATA controller and it served me well for almost a year. If you upgrade to a G5, you can install your 250GB drive in it. IMHO, no brainer.

Thanx QoMaster. Tha's the info I was after. I thought it would work, just hate the idea of getting it home and finding out the worst. WD's site doesn't hardly even mention Mac's, much less G5's and I recently had a less than savoury experience with one of those new Lightscribe drives.

Blessings upon you and your children.
Cheers,
BK

I also recommend the Seagates, as they have been reliable for me, and don't recommend the Maxtors, which have not been reliable for me.

Whatever you have, just make sure that you have Disk Warrior. Really. It has saved my life on a number of occasions.

Yep, I'd say Seagate or WD are essentially the same in terms of their 7200RPM drives.

BK, you'll notice (if you go with the WD) that the included documentation is all Windows. Don't worry. Just install the drive, and run Disk Utility. In fact, after you install the drive, and boot, OSX will throw a dialog box up that says something like "You have inserted a disk that is unreadable. Launch Disk Utility?" It may offer other options (can't remember), or you might not see the dialog at all (but you probably will).

Anway, just Erase the disk in Disk Utility and you're then good to go. Have fun with the new space!

Seagate offer a 5 year warranty on their drives.
I have two internal 80GB 7200 rpm, 8 mb caches types that work great.

I went for durabililty over speed.

If you want the fastest transfer rate, the 10,000 rpm Raptor is the way to go.

man, I was just thinking about a PC I bought years ago, my friends were all envious 'cause it had a 10meg (yes, meg) drive.

They all went "whoa, that's a BEAST!".
