coupla things I don't understand
A. Why do I have to log in every time I come to this site? I have been checking the remember me box for weeks.
B. Searching. I type the query: Saving AND DP AND Files. I get anything that has any of these words. Is quotes better? I only want to see posts about saving DP files not posts about saving displaced persons and everything else the engine can think of with those words somewhere in the text.
C. What is the best way to move DP project files to a different H D so I don't wind up with missing sound bytes? The files will go from one computer to another. Or I can just move a vacant drive into the source computer maybe. Will using an external drive on USB 2.0 slow things down much? That would be easier than swapping internal drives.
Target disk as far as I can tell, wants to move everything on the drive. I may want to be more selective. I don't have any experience with disk image but it seems like it's everything on the drive also. Thanks if you can help.

Re: coupla things I don't understand
This past week has been a strange one. James first changed servers-- moved the entire site to a faster/better server. Some settings might have gotten jumbled. James also made an effort to update the site skin, then he changed everything back again until the details can be fine tuned a bit better.guitron45 wrote:A. My guess is that any time a certain amount of maintenance is done, user password entry has to be refreshed where old cookies may have expired. Generally speaking, the site will remember your password, and your browser will remember it, too, if set up to do so.
The only explanation for why you'd have to log on every time would be that the intervals between your logging on include some sort of site maintenance.
Using site search engines require a bit of psychology. Terms that are most meaningful to you could appear in any post or thread. So you have to get a little clever about sleuthing..guitron45 wrote: B. Searching. I type the query: Saving AND DP AND Files. I get anything that has any of these words. Is quotes better? -- you should probably never put in DP as a search criterion since so much of the site is DP-related.... that is, unless you are looking for info on a particular version of DP, in which case you could put in "5.13" or "4.61" to the same effect. Choose the "Digital Performer Forum" instead on the left side and omit DP from your criteria.
-- think of other terms related to your problem such as "error code #...", etc. If you are having a file save issue, then chances are terms like "lost" or "failed" along with "file" might be more helpful. It could also be that the information you seek hasn't been discussed. You can also start your own thread to either ask your question about saving-- or you could simply ask if anyone can redirect you to a discussion about saving. Whenever I post a thread link to help someone it's generally because I remembered that a particular thread on the topic had taken place on one or more occasions.
Good question, Ron!!guitron45 wrote: C. What is the best way to move DP project files to a different H D so I don't wind up with missing sound bytes? The files will go from one computer to another. A USB drive is fine for *moving* projects, but not the best option for *running* them, imho. This is because USB delivers data in packages instead of a steadier stream like FW. Busy projects could run the risk of audio dropouts with a USB drive as clumps of data are collected in quantity before they are ported through the bus.
You could just drag over your entire DP project while keeping the project folder directory intact-- or you can just open the project in DP and save the whole thing (with the copy audio option selected) to the mounted drive of your choice.
If you want to move multiple projects, it's best to just drag the projects from one drive to another. I often have backups of large sample libraries on some kind of FW drive. When installing those VIs, for example, on different computers, the FW drive serves as a source where I want to port the samples from one computer to another but also want to the benefit of SATA or eSATA performance.
I wouldn't rely on automated utilities. With everything from Software Update for OSX to Time Machine on Leopard to Target Disc mode or even Migration Assistant, users have reported everything from total success to total failure. Mileage can vary greatly, and while automated tools are wonderful, all it takes is one glitch... That's my personal safe suggestion, anyway. Others might feel differently and that's okay, too.

Since joining UN, I've checked that box thousands of times, but have never been logged in automatically.
Like the sucker that I am, I just keep on ticking the box, but I swear it hasn't even worked once yet for me.
UN remembers who I am, but still presents me with the log-in window (complete with empty "remember me" checkbox) every single time.
Been meaning to ask this question for a very long time.
Baffling, to be sure.

Ditto what rcannonp said - I haven't had any problems with firefox or Safari logging me in automatically - interesting.
I do have Safari set to accept all cookies and Firefox is set to accept cookies for third party sites. I'm not sure if that matters or not.

DP Friends. Thank you for the excellent help. I forgot to check to watch this thread button so I'm late in responding but just as grateful for your help.

It might have something to do with your using dialup since your IP address may be different each time you connect.monkey man wrote:Since joining UN, I've checked that box thousands of times, but have never been logged in automatically.

Re: coupla things I don't understand
Try just typing all the criterial without using the AND, then check the box that says "Search for all terms." Also, it helps sometimes to view results as posts instead of threads.guitron45 wrote: B. Yes, my IP does this; that must be why I have to log on many times each night and why I experience many invalid sessions.
Some would argue that all my sessions are invalid, but that's another matter.
