Waves sound-a-like-plug ins?

Post by Radiogal »

I´m seeking for a substitude for the Waves Platinum bundle.
I use the R-vox a lot... Are there any other plug ins that can do the same? Any suggestions?
PS. I already use the Sonalksis plugs.

Hi, RG.

Just out of curiosity, is the reason you want to do that THE obvious reason?

You'll find a few suggestions in this long thread, towards the middle of it (after the rants).

Hi Radiogal,

Long time since I used the waves plugs (think Nubus TDM era). I'm not sure there are too many plugs like the Rvox, but with these you can mix'n'match and come up with great things....
Here are a few ideas to help you get started...
UAD plugs - There's quite a few, take a look at them yourself you won't be dissapointed sound-quality wise)
MetricHalo's Channelstrip, good channelstrip. really meat'n'potatoes kid'o' plug
Sonnox - the Sony Oxford with a new name..
URS's channelstrip... hear good things about them.

Hey RG,

http://www.yohng.com/w1limit.html

From George Yohng's site:
W1 Limiter is a clone of Waves L1, with identical output.

Another interesting comment:
Since this cloning could be done, you may have no doubt that in the future I'll provide you with a commercial limiter, that beats everything currently available (I have prototypes already).

It's a start anyway, and it's free.
I'd be interested to know what you think of it. :D

Good call, Dave, but that reminds me:
RG, don't forget DP6's LA2A sim; it's apparently going to feature 4 characters/topologies. :?

RG,

I notice in your equip. list that you have a UAD-1. What plugs have you authorized and what are you using the most? Have you demo'd the others yet? Just curious. I have been slowly replacing Waves stuff myself.

Radiogal, I use Waves plugs, albeit reluctantly these days. I'm sick of their trying to squeeze money out of me. I've paid them many thousands of dollars to purchase and to continue to be "up to date" (WUP), and in return they have shorted me a year of that paid-up support and even left me with software that would not install for 6 months, until they wrote a new installer that worked for Platinum Bundle owners. But you did not start this thread to hear my rants. So, let's get down to the question.

R-Vox is a multi-stage processor that does a lot while keeping the interface down to two controls. Well, 3 controls if you include the Gain. Its compressing, limiting, and expanding all at once, depending on where you look. The compression includes automatic gain makeup, so any change in dynamics caused by your settings will automatically be compensated by the makeup gain. At the same time, you can set it any way you want, and it won't clip. It uses the L1 technology to prevent clipping.

So, you're looking basically at the L1 limiter and the Ren compressor. To replace R-Vox, you'll probably need to combine a couple of plugins to do this job. Still, you may not have the auto-gain makeup. That would depend on the compressor or processor, I guess. So, R-Vox is a pretty sophisticated little piece of gear. You can surely find ways to replace it, but unless it's designed specifically for that purpose, your mileage may vary. Sorry to say that I don't know the details on most other plugins, since I don't own many compressors/EQs or Limiters beside Waves. MOTU's Masterworks Limiter would help, combined with any good compressor that has a tube sound. But getting them all to work together with the easy gate control of R-Vox may be darn near impossible.

All I can say is to look around carefully for plugins that mimic the R-Compressor and the L1 Limiter. You may find something better out there.

You could try FabFilter's Pro-C compressor.
This is a very good compressor w/ a built in sidechain.

Hi Phil
About UAD-1, I use Pultec & Pultec Pro the most. I love them.
I have all the plugins that came with the UAD 1 Mackie package (I bought it in it´s early days..) I added the Pultec Pro . Recently I bought the Precision De-esser but I can´t install until I update to Tiger and sadly I then automaticly get rid of my Waves Platinum Bundle :(
I have tested all the UAD demos my system can run.
I still use Pather 10.3.9 ONLY for the sake of Waves... and that´s the reason I started this Waves substitute question...cuz I need to go on to Tiger. DP 6 is coming :)

Have you considered Leopard? I'm running DP 5.13 with OS 10.5.2 and having great luck with it.

I'm starting to get into the Pultec plug myself. It has a kind of silky high end that I like, especially on vocals. I use the LA-2A and 1176 plugs a lot as well. I was having all sorts of problems with Waves plug-ins, and I've finally given up on them. After this WUP expires that's it. I'm done with them.

The PSP mixpressor v.2 is a nice compressor. I'm trying to get rid of Waves too and this might take the place of Ren Comp.

I don't have an UAD card and find it hard to find a deesser to replace the Waves...
