MOTU Repair

Post by Budmas21 »

Has anyone had any experience sending their hardware back to MOTU for repair? I may be in that situation and was wondering what the typical costs would be? I understand that it depends on the problem (I believe my 896HD's firewire ports have gone bad). Either way, my unit is out of warranty and I may have to return it. Any idea what the cost of such a job may be? Thanks.

Do a search here for "Traveler" and "noise", and you can probably answer this question yourself.

Call or email them first with a description of the problem. Although they won't be able to give you a true estimate until they can actually examine the item, they can give you a basic bench check fee. Then they will contact you with the actual estimate. Depending on the issue, though, it may take awhile. I sent an 828 in for repairs awhile back and it took 6 weeks.

Thanks for the replies. I actually tested the 896HD on my PC and it worked fine with the Vista drives, so I have to assume it's a software conflict of some sort on my Mac. I asked MOTU Tech support they would send me the old 1.4.5 drivers, but they said that it wasn't very good and they couldn't do that. Funny, my problems didn't occur until I updated to 1.4.7... hmmm... anyway, I guess I just have to live with this problem and hope that when DP 6 releases, they also update the drivers and see if it resolves.

Last I heard they charge a flat fee of $90.00 or so if you are not under warranty.

When 1.4.5 was current, they were fine with it. What will they say about 1.4.7 in a couple of months?

Seriously, it's kind of astonishing that they would NOT send you something that DID work for you in the past. Are they trying to help you or not?

Makes me wonder, too. I'll give them a call today and let them know that I sent in my error report and see what they say (most likely nothing). Either way, someone on the boards sent me a link to the old drivers, but the link actually pulls the file from wherever MOTU actually has them, so you still get 1.4.7.... The agony....!! Either way, a minor inconvenience for me.

The old drivers are pre-Leopard, so I haven't tried them, in fact, I think they're pre-Intel Mac. If I remember correctly, when I received my install disk for the 896HD, the Intel Macs had just came out, so you had to upgrade the drivers on the web site.

Hello,
Yeah, I went back through my archive but since we are still on PMac G5's none are suitable for your app.

Well, if anyone happens to have the the drivers for firewire versions 1.4.5 or 1.4.6, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'd like to at least test out my theory before I can really tell MOTU that everything they asked me to try will not work, because I've pretty much tried it. This is all I lack is the old drivers that worked for Leopard. Well, that and I haven't reinstalled Tiger to see if that does anything.
