I Have PTHD3 files. How can I do overdubs in DP5/6?

Post by zonamusic »

My Studio A is a PTHD3 system. My Studio B so far consists of a Mac 2.5 dual and DP. Can someone suggest a hardware setup that I can configure in Studio B so that I can overdub my Motif and orchestration from my separate softsynth setup (Kontakt2, Giga) and acoustic guitar overdubs utilizing a very good pre and converter, and then eventually take back to my HD3 setup for final mix. What choices would I have for a converter (only need stereo--can do it ITB)? I don't want to do any degrading file conversion if at all possible. Can I do this in the DP environment or do I need to at least pick up a PTLE type system?

PTLE is your easiest option, as you will be able to open your sessions done in PTHD directly. Trying to import them in DP, and then moving the new files back to your other room will be much more labor intensive. You could get a 003 system which I am sure is on par with the better motu stuff, plus you will be able to use it with DP as well. Or, buy an Mbox, and a pair of better convertors to plug into it. Once you are done tracking, you can use PT's "Import Session Data" command to import the new tracks back into the pre-existing "mother ship" session. This is too easy to consider any other option.

it could depend a bit on how much MIDI data you're going to be dealing with. if your projects are mostly AUDIO, as pcm mentioned, go with PTLE, as it handles audio - particularly editing - much better than DP. otoh, if you're going to be creating a lot of MIDI data, DP is hands down a better program for editing MIDI than PTLE. if you're going to go with the PTools -> DP -> PTools route, you might have to look in to OMF as a way to exchange the data.
DP 9.52(OS 10.13.6), PTools 11.3.3, Sibelius 2021.12,
MacPro 5,1 mid-2010, 2 x 2.93Ghz 12 core, ATI Radeon HD 5870, 64 Gig RAM, 4 x >120G SSDs, 2 x 25" LCDs
couple o' hardware synths, loadza legal libraries
Kurz Midiboard, MOTU MTP AV
