What audio cd burning software do you use?

Post by daveyboy »

I'm on a new intel 8 core mac and get crashes in Roxio Toast 8.03. i've narrowed it down to something to do with a conflict with my pci 424 card. I was getting a crash every time toast finished burning an audio cd. I turned off the preference for toast to beep and fixed that. Then, when I go to adjust a custom cross fade I'll get a crash when I hit apply. I can fix that too by making sure that the mac's sound output is set to internal and not the pci card. But, I can't hear what I'm doing. I assume there's no fix for this problem so in the meantime I'm curious if there's anything else out there besides Itunes. I have Jam too but that no longer works as is stated on Roxio's site. I do have Wave Burner 1.2 but haven't tried that (just remembered!).Thanks for any suggestions.

Based on how you're using your current software, I'm guessing that iTunes isn't full-featured enough for your CD burning needs.

That puts you in the category of audio editor programs (stereo vs. multi-tracked DAW's), such as Audacity (not sure if it supports CD burning features), BIAS Peak (several versions -- check their website to see how up the chain you have to go to get the CD burning playlists), and a new kid on the block called Wave Editor -- it was discussed last fall and some of us downloaded the demo and found it too much like PhotoShop for an intuitive audio workflow (the program was deliberately patterned after the PhotoShop way of using filter plug-ins and layers, etc.).

Also Adobe probably has some useful apps for this purpose, but I've lost track of which ones are available on the Mac as that sometimes changes from release to release. Their apps tend to be a bit pricey also.

OTOH you may have a solution for your current predicament, which seems to be a compatibility issue that likely has been resolved. Maybe somebody else here owns the software in question and has found a workaround or compatibility patch upgrade.

I forgot peak has a playlist deal. I have Peak. I just want a simple app (like toast orjam). I'll deal with toast and be ready for the crashes at this point.

If you want simple, you could try Burn.

I'm still using Jam 6.0.3 under Leopard 10.5.2 for making audio CDs and have had no problems.

I just now finished using Toast 8.0.3 to burn DVDs of a client's mixes using both the Optiarch drive in my new Mac Pro and the superdrive from my dead G5 (now installed in the second bay of the Mac Pro) with no problems at all.

I have been using Toast & Jam for years and they have both been flawless.

I have tried Waveburner, and while I liked the interface, I found it was burning some bad Audio CD's. Jam has never burned a bad disk for me in the over 15 years that I have used it (it was called Astarte Toast CD-DA back then).

I believe that Roxio has moved many of the Audio features from Jam into Toast. I am not sure if there will be a UB version of Jam.
