Digital Performer and Pro Tools LE on same computer

Post by Pound »

Hey guys. A good friend of mine offered me a job in another state at a studio engineering. The problem is they use Pro Tools and SSL consoles. The studio I engineer at now uses DP and a Yamaha O2R console.

I've used Pro Tools a few times, briefly. I know I can learn it, I just need to sit down with it and mess with it. So I was thinking of getting a little LE setup just so I could learn the software and familiarize myself with everything. My question is if I put it on my computer, that I already have DP set up on, will the two conflict? Will this screw up everything? My setup runs great now and I don't wanna mess it up.

Now I don't know how I'm going to learn an SSL before I get down there. I have to figure that out.

I have ProTools LE and DP both on my laptop with no problems. One thing to remember, though, you have to use a Digi approved interface. Either a Digidesign or M-Audio interface will work depending on which flavor of ProTools you get. You can then also use that interface with DP. Good luck with the new gig.

Thanks. I was just going to get a Mbox or something, just so I can learn the software.

I have them both on my G5 and on a Mac Book Pro, and there don't appear to be any problems. (I assume you're talking about just having them presnet, not running them simultaneously.)

Yes. I was just making sure that having them both on the same computer, wouldn't somehow mess things up.

Just did it myself - I'm running DP, PT LE, and Logic on the same computer -
Actually have them up at the same time for certain things. The new MBox Micro is great for just learning the software and prepping sessions - no audio input, but it's around $250. Good luck!

No Problems here either.

I bought an Mbox for the same reason recently and it's been great plus i've even taken it out on small jobs.

I find PT's and DP to co-exist very nicely, however I do use separate interfaces/controllers for the two and simply leave one off for stability etc. when not in use. There's been some reports here however the 7.4's CoreAudio driver is much more stable for third party apps though in case you want to use a 003R for DP or similar.

Same here: I switch interfaces when using the programs. Mbox2 for PT and then MOTU 896HD for DP. No problems at all!

Ill jump in, too.

No problems here with PT LE and DP 5.11.

I do leave the M-Box off (disconnect USB cable) when not needed, and I only use PT for file transfers to DP, but I haven't experienced any conflicts.

Sometimes, (probably overcautious) I will reboot after using PT, before launching DP.

I, too, would like to learn PT enough to not be a complete PT dummie!

Hi Guys!

Again, no problem here with DP 5.12 and PTLE using the M-Box 2 Pro. I also use Logic when needs must. I find it best to reboot the M-Box between using different apps - annoyingly difficult as there is no power button, you have to unplug the power and the Firewire cable! If you already have I/O you're happy with and just want to familiarize yourself with the PT software, why not look at one of the little USB stick M-Box Micro things:

I've got a rather nifty system at the moment that is working rather well for me. I am using both DP 5.13 and PTLE 7.4 on my G5. I'm using an Mbox 2 on USB, leaving Firewire free for external drives and LiquidMix.

The Mbox is connected by spdif to the Traveler on my MacBook Pro, as I prefer the sound of the D/A, and it means I can have iTunes open for reference.

I am mixing an album on PTLE with the Music Production Toolkit (now there's $500 well spent). I am doing any drum replacement or tuning in DP, as all the VIs work better (or correctly), and I am constantly running files to and from PT and DP. I have them both open at the same time, and what is brilliant is having the Euphonix MC Mix, which recognises which application is in the foreground.

So all in all this scenario works really well here.
kind regards

Hi Stephen, So when you are running ProTools, the Mbox is recognized, even though it is connected to the MacBook Pro through a spdif cable into the Traveller, which is connected to the laptop by a Firewire cable? (I realize you just said this, but I didn't think that PT would recognize the Mbox, if it is plugged into a Traveller!) Recognized on input and output?

I see that you have both programs running simultaneously (i realize you Brits pronounce that word like The Sims, though we Yanks say it like Simon.) and wonder if that's only possible because of the Euphonix MC Mix?

My last two questions are, -so the Mbox has a sweet D/A sound?
And how is iTunes only possible with this configuration?

Those were my four questions. Cheers!
