I found the missing desktop pictures bug...

Post by James Steele »

This is interesting. If anybody has an issue with their desktop pictures gone missing in Leopard (that is you open the Control Panel for desktop pics and the apple, nature, 3-D stock pictures are gone... you can get them back by opening Safari to a web page, right-clicking on any image on the displayed page and then choosing the "Use Image as Desktop Picture." When the image becomes your desktop picture, right click on the Desktop, choose "Change Desktop Background" and magically all your stock desktop pics are back!!! They won't last though... they will disappear again and then doing this brings it back... bizarre!

I've noticed that all the pics and references are gone too, James.

Fair dinkum, only tonight I noticed that my .zip files (all created with the Finder up to 12 months ago) now have corrupted (weird-looking) icons.
Then there's the permissions issue I've had, where they got so bad a DU repair would estimate 5+ hours remaining 6 hours into the process.
Docs, text files, SD2 files, CueMix and ClockWorks files, DP SD2s that aren't interleaved... are all corrupted, and there are still more daily surprises.

I honestly feel like wiping everything, reinstalling from scratch and forwarding my entire backup collection to someone who specialises in restoring these things to their former glory.
That is, I would do this had I not already performed numerous clean installs, and I would send the data off to someone if I knew who to send it to and could afford it, and lastly, I would love to take this sort of action but the almost daily surprises Leo's throwing up at me mean I have no faith things would work properly subsequent to any repairs.

Sorry for the rant, Jimbo. I realise you've had a good run so far with Leo; I sure hope this isn't the start of something ugly for you. :?

Apparently 10.5.2 is a dog of an upgrade for many. Macfixit.com is reporting many problems of every sort. Apple admits that they knew of a display bug! KNEW! And they didn't address it before releasing the upgrade?

Now THAT is unforgivable.

Geez, for a fella still on 5.1 and having all sorts of issues, that's mighty inspiring, Magilla.

Well... I went looking on some forums and found that the missing desktop pictures can also be fixed by setting the Mac to cycle through the pictures in the folder ever couple of seconds. The invisible ones appear and hopefully they stay visible later... not sure as I haven't completed this.
