Mac Pro = no 2408?

Post by Dave Connor »

Do I understand correctly that the 2408 is still not compatable with Mac Pro's? I have two 2408's plus a 308 to get into my G5 and would hate to have to get another card (like the Apogee) for the Mac Pro. Even so, what's everyone doing to make use of 2408's even if they do have an Apogee or whatever?

Sorry if this is an old issue. I understand MOTU is working on it but just wanted to confirm it's still a no-go.

Thanks,

DC

2408 not compatible with the MacPro? Ah, so that's been my problem. I've been running two of them on my MacPro all year!!

j/k :P

Hey Dave, not sure what's causing this. Have you updated your drivers?

Are you using PCIe cards specifically? The PCIx cards that ran in all but one G5 will not be compatible.

Things are working fine in Leopard, too!

No, no, Fodo - I don't own a Mac Pro! I would like to get one at some point but all I have ever heard is that people were using Apogee Symphony or whatever to get in an out of those things. I thought there were very few things that worked as is the case with Windows 64 bit OS.'

Great news in any case. And no, your hardware is not your problem: your problems began when you left the Shire. But you didn't have much choice with the visitors that started showing up in town.

LOL!! There's no place like home-- or was that another story? :P

Ah, I thought you'd already *gotten* your MacPro. Oh, goodie-- now you'll be in the running for the new mega-Octal that just came out.

Yes, there's much to praise about Apogee, no doubt. But MOTU PCIe interfaces are not a problem on Intel. In fact, I don't ever remember them being a problem.

You know Frodo, I figured out why I had that question mark: Leopard. Wasn't there a period when Leopard/2408 was a show stopper? All is well now I guess. What OS do you have on your Mac Pro?

Yes, it was an INTERMINABLE 12 hours before MOTU released their hardware drivers for Leopard! I ALMOST DIED WAITING AND WAITING!!!!! :D

Actually I am pretty sure I remember MOTU having their Leopard audio driver up the same day Leopard was released. I could be wrong though.

OTOH maybe you are thinking of this. Logic Pro 8 users reported problems with the 424 card/2408 on intel machines when logic 8 first came out. I would expect that got resolved somewhere along the line -- it was an Apple problem I think.

OR I have seen some intel mac users report that there machine does not "see" the 424 card. However most mac pro users "see" it fine. So I don't know what that issue is -- I hope those that have it can get it resolved.

Good news in any case and thankfully a non issue since I need another 2408 with my expanding 64 bit slaves.

Thanks folks,

Yeah.. the system profiler on my 8 core showed the card but pci audio setup would lose it. May take a few jiggles but it will come on line... eventually.

+1 on 2408 success with Mac Pro and Leopard. No problems here. I don't use the 2408 that often, but when I do, it kicks in like the little worker bee that it was intended to be.

The following interfaces are working on my MacPro/Leopard/2.66Ghz/3GB Ram:

2408
1296
896
MTP-AV (USB)
MTP-AV (serial, networked into the USB version)

In fact, nearly everything I own is fully or partly Leopard compatible. I just learned that SoundSoap2 is not compatible as a plugin, but the standalone version works fine, so I can clean up tracks and then load them into DP. Ivory is the only thing I have that simply won't run in Leopard. Of course, we're talking music stuff here. I have quite a few old apps that won't run in Leopard, like the old Photoshop 7.2, several versions of Preview, and assorted other things which I cannot remember and do not miss. Fortunately, I have a new version of Photoshop and at least the one working version of Preview, so I'm really not out anything at this time, except for Ivory, which has rekindled my love of Akoustik Piano (which is working fine).

More than you asked for, but hey... I'll have them remove the charges from the invoice!

Actually I first tried my older driver in Leopard with DP 5.12. It was 5.12 that was problematic, but the audio driver seemed "okay", although unofficial.

Leo was released Oct 26th, but I remember that there was some confusion with MOTU driver versions until about November 20th. New drivers were released with DP 5.13 just a few days before that (like, the 16th), prior to the drivers being re-updated.

I've got 10.4.11 which is still my workhorse. I also have 10.5.1 on a separate drive, but I haven't had tons of time to get it totally configured for production. I've got DP 5.13 and only one or two VIs and effects installed. I'll dig into more next month now that more of what I need has been updated for Leopard.

I believe a Leopard-compatible update was recently released.

Well I'm stuck with Leopard if I get a new Mac Pro (which isn't a bad thing.) The only things I need to run are a couple of Waves plugins (S1 and Q10), Altiverb and Komplete 4 and Kontakt. Is Waves the only question mark in this group?

Thanks for all the good info here btw folks,

You will probably need to update your KOMPLETE apps -- NI did univeral binary versions (intel) of all of them, they will either be a free download or a nominal paid download, depending on when you registered your KOMPLETE. If you log into your account at the NI website it will tell you what is available, free or not.

------

There was some talk of NI **installers** not working on Leopard. In other words, the apps work under leopard, but the installers fail.

NI was supposed to release a patched installer. I don't know the status of that. I will look real quick:

YES NATIVE INSTRUMENTS did release a universal installer patch for OS X 10.5:

http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=leopard
Native Instruments has released a universal installer patch for Mac OS X 10.5 that fixes this issue for all affected products. Please download and apply this patch when encountering any installation issues. The patch is available for download here...
-- I am so excited for you getting this new machine.

Thanks a whole lot for that good info emulator. I'm going to get the machine at some point but I'm building a new PC (8 gig Core 2 Duo 3.0 ghz) and upgrading another PC to 8 gigs as well (Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz.) If my G5 Dual 2.7 (4 Altiverb instances) can't keep up on longer sequences (which my current project requires) than it will be sooner rather than later.

Incidently, West LA Music just sent me an email that the new macs can network with other macs without the need for a sound card (on the networked machine I believe.) Anyone know about this? It's not the Logic node thing but a mac to mac thing I guess.

I saw that, too. The question is whether this is something DP and other Mac DAWs can employ or if it's something that only Logic can take advantage of right now without the node thingy.

Without the need for a sound card-- Could that suggest that Built-In audio (optical) is the way they recommend? Some high-end digital consoles are using an industry grade LAN format for audio connections, but I'll have to take another look at the new machines to check this out. At present, the consumer-grade LAN connections have been far from ideal for audio. However, there are companies who have provided interim solutions:

I wasn't too keen on the way Tiger handled MIDI over IP. It didn't always kick in and when it did it wasn't reliable. Also, you couldn't save setups, so if you shut down the computer you had to do your configurations from scratch. MOL, of course, was the software solution that made the most sense.

If the new computers have figured this out in audio world, it should be considered a major accomplishment! What I'd like to find out is how currently compatible this feature is with G5s and 2007 MacPros.
