PCI BUS LATENCY SETTING FOR PCI-424(X) CARD

Post by dwire »

The title says it all... I need to know if anyone has done any studies/comparisons on the effects of the BIOS applied PCI BUS LATENCY SETTING, and what might be optimal for the modern PCI-424(X) I believe. I don't think you need to know my setup, as I am looking for what the card likes, and more accurately, what it can stand as I have a total of 11 PCI cards stacked up between my system and an expansion bay(PCI and some PCIe's), and I am looking for some info on the MOTU unit to balance things out for everyone on the busses. Let me know if I need go into detail about my system. I already put something in at MOTU tech support, but since, one they suck at support in general, and two they REALLY suck at supporting the PC user, I expect it to be a very long wait for anything from them...

So, no one here knows either... Funny MOTU Tech Staff = 0!

After what seems to be about only 15 views, I guess no one here knows what the optimum native PCI Bus Latency setting might be for my PCI-424(X) card. Well I got an even more interesting response from my MOTU TechLink. Here is what the "brain" Ronan had to say about my question:

There is no ideal Buffer setting. Most users change they're buffer settings depending on what they are doing. They may choose a lower buffer Size when tracking audio tracks so that it does not interfere with the musicians performance and a higher buffer size during mixing so they will be able to use more processing.

It is also not possible to predict what type of performance you should expect off a particular system since there are too many variables such as the software you are using, the sample rate you are recording at, the number of simultaneous tracks you are recording. Also you have mentioned that you have a lot of PCI devices attached to this system which will affect your PCI bandwidth and overall performance.

What the heck? HELLO RONAN...??? ARE YOU WITH US HERE ON PLANET EARTH?
Geez, I am asking for the best case scenario with a full PCI-424(X) card with three HD192's and one 2408 mk3 running on it. Then I can get familiar with the bus handling, bandwidth requirements of all my equipment and set the right compromise for my PCI Bus Latency in BIOS.
Man, I knew Tech Support at MOTU was awful, but I waited six days, and then after sending a response to customer support, that explained the terrible situation with their Tech Support Staff, that was quite deliberately threatening. That came with no response, either to my email to customer support about Tech Support, or a response through the TechLink system. I finally got the answer posted above which does not even pertain to my question at all after calling and making verbal threats to the customer support staff.

MOTU has always had a bad support network, from their terribly atrocious FAQ section on their site to the response time to REAL FIELD ISSUES OF A WORKING COMPANY! Boy, Digidesign is looking better and better, I know they support their products, in short order, and I'll bet with at least relevant information. We ought to all band together and complain about MOTU's practices as far as they pertain to Tech Support, and their now "new and improved" TechLink system, which sucks at best... Six days, a threatening email to customer support, and finally a call on my dime to get that reply? Give me a break.

Sure wished someone on this forum had some answers for me...

Best regards,
