Ok, so I couldn't resist trying out the new kitty, on a spare partition of course... and fully understanding no DP for now. It seems like it will be a cool os, once the boo boo's get worked out. Just a heads up for anyone attempting to network and share a drive. Somehow in attempting to share a drive the new 'sharing' stuff managed to 'lock' all of my hard drives to read only permissions for all users.... swine kitty... ok. reboot to trusted Tiger to fix... ahh no.... drives show locked ... they actually have a little lock in the lower left hand corner.... repair permissions produces an error ...uh oh... disk repair doesn't unlock the drive, attemting to change permissions causes finder crash. Leopard no longer boots....not in safe mode either... fool locked itself out of the house... ok at least I can still boot in to Tiger. Only way to fix the drives is to reformat them... I had one left open to start back ups.... Carbon Copy Cloner is my friend here. I'll be donating once I've completed my back ups... I run 2 versions of Tiger, and have another 700 gigs of data to copy/unlock... thank goodness I can still read the drives.... anyway, I'll reinstall the snarly kitty and try again, but I'll staying away from any permission / networking stuff, until I buy yet another external back up drive... OK ccc's almost done my next partition, gotta goooooo!!!!!
Regards, Rob
PS Just checked apple's site, lots of issues with networked drives.... too bad I could've done some work with Leopard, but that's a deal breaker... I'll still install it, but will work with Tiger.... I liked the mail program ;(

Thanks for the report. I am getting Leopard but not installing it on my production machine until everything gets sorted out.
FWIW Carbon Copy Cloner got me thru 10.1 to 10.2. It is great.
For 10.2 to 10.3 and 10.3 to 10.4, I switched to SuperDuper -- a lot more flexible:

Hi E'loo,
Thanks for the b/u tips.... everything is restored fine, and I've given it another shot.... things are better this time around, I added a registered user right from the sys prefs menu and life is good... took awhile to get everything back though... growing pains I guess... But I'm liking Leopard anyway!!!

Leopard adds ACL (Access Control Lists), a feature taken from Tiger Server. As you found out - you need to make sure users are added to the list to gain access to shares/network volumes/network directories.
Once you wrap your head around the whole ACL thing it makes a lot of sense and adds a lot of flexibility to who has access to what.
I'm anxious to get my hands on Leopard - but am waiting for confirmation that all my software will work.

Hi Steve,
Regards, Rob
Just to clarify, yes this is cool. Working from system prefs/sharing works groovy. The first time around I was messing with the drive read/write permissions from the desktop. I don't remember the sequence of events leading up to it, but somehow Leopard locked ALL of my drives to read only, even ones I had hidden... finder crashed when I tried to change it back, and then wouldn't boot anymore. This wasn't a matter of a wrong setting... it crashed and burned... badly... but it's all good now!!! except I just discovered that excel is crashing under leopard as well. Fix one thing, find another broken... lol... are the dp / office updates ready yet????Once you wrap your head around the whole ACL thing it makes a lot of sense and adds a lot of flexibility to who has access to what.
Regards, Rob
