I would go with the matte screen. The reflections on the glossy screens get annoying pretty quickly.

After years of matte LCD screens and laptop screens, I have to say that I infinitely prefer the gloss screens.... we have 15.4" and 17" Macbooks, and I don't have a problem with reflections, love the greater depth and blacks..... maybe not best for video work, but viewing film and video is a pleasure.....

cheers

I have a powerbook g4 with matte and with the dog, some hair and dirt somehow got behind the screen thru the side trims and now cast a little shadow of it self on the screen. I would go with the gloss as it will be sealed along the edges so nothing can get behind the screen.

my 2 cents

Neurologically speaking for long DAW sessions, the matte is less fatiguing for me.....
For multimedia satisfaction, the gloss all the way. It's a shame threre is not the option to have access to both on the same machine for different applications. For music I would boot up matte, then get a all glossy (n'sh*t) for my quicktime and iphoto, efluff... etc.
Macbook pro, 3 gigs of ram, osx 10.62, Dp 5.13, Live 8.1.2, Reason 4, Tc powercore Virus, Albino 3.02, proper ergonomic sitting posture, plenty of coffee (french press only with a pinch of cardamon added)
My dp inspired music.....

Thanks for the feedback. I think I'd be happy with the same screen I have on my PBG4. Truth is, I'm actually not ready for an Intel MBP and hadn't planned on it, but the power supply is busted on my laptop and I may not get it back from Apple Care in time.

Still looking, still wondering, still number crunching, but keeping my fingers crossed.

Video editors seem to prefer glossy for richer colors. I think matte is easier on your eyeballs.

Seems odd to me but I found that the glossy is much more visible outdoors. The poor old matte PBG4 screens are impossible to use without substantial shade.

This past spring when I had to replace my G4 PB I went to the local Apple Store and sat 2 17" MBPs side by side - one glossy one matte.

After a few minutes of using both the following was obvious:
The glossy screen was very nice for adding richness & saturation to the colors - great for multimedia playback, but a poor choice for any design work (which I do), since colors shift (particularly the saturation/hue) from their true space with the glossy screen.

I also found the matte finish to be easier on my eyes in a bright environment. Reflection of light was a little annoying until you get the laptop & screen angle positioned just right...which concerned me.

In the end I opted for the matte.

I think if you're sitting in a dark room with nothing reflecting on the glass, glossy screens are great and much richer. I am almost never sitting a dark room that would make that work for me.
