When I empty trash...I get wierdness

For some reason, for the last month or so, I am unable to completely empty the trash. I get an error message that say something like-

Unable to complete task- answerbase is in use... or recovered files is in use
and sometimes .DS_Store is locked

what is this stuff??? I really want an empty trash can.....!!
