Favorite OS X sys maintenance utility? YASU? Cocktail?

Post by emulatorloo »

I don't leave my machine on all the time, and I don't enjoy mucking around in the terminal. So I feel the need to run a maintenance utility now and again. Was wondering if any of you had a pref for a OS X maintenance utility.

I have used YASU:

I have used Cocktail:

Do you prefer one over the other? Is there another one I am overlooking?

I like this the best:

http://www.santasw.com/

especially because it does other things besides maintenance, like clearing dashboard processes, and disabling the dashboard.

`
I've sworn by YASU and Cocktail.
Both have served me well.
MainMenu enjoyed a stint for a while too.

I get the feeling that the authorship of these apps doesn't involve rocket science, which could explain why so many of them seem reliable.
After all, many of the facilities on offer are existing Mac processes, merely being instigated from a convenient interface.

Just thinking out 'loud, really, but quite a few of them seem rock solid. :D

Sure is; thank you Dave Bourke!

My only concern is: is it fool/monkey proof? :?

This one seems to be doing OK. I think he is sticking with the "presets" though, like I will be doing.

I started using Clix about two years ago as a means of trying to educate myself about the Unix underpinnings of OS X. If you don't like reading or researching then you're probably better off using point-and-click options like Onyx or YASU.

Essentially, Clix is a means of accessing the power of Terminal with more than a thousand correctly typed and formatted shell commands. But it's YOUR job to understand what those commands can and will do. With great power comes great responsibility. :)

Kind regards.

Dang, Davo. Is there not an explanatory list somewhere?

From Mac Help (Help Menu in the Finder)
Getting help for UNIX commands
Help for the hundred of UNIX tools and commands available in Mac OS X is available in the Terminal utility. To learn how to use a command, refer to the command's "man" (manual) page.

Open Terminal, then enter "man" and the name of the command. For example, to learn about the uptime command, enter:
man uptime

Press the Space bar to display the next page, or type Q to quit.
For information about using man to display manual pages in Terminal, enter "man man". For information about viewing text in Terminal, enter "man more".
I think you can open the man pages in CLIX too but I have yet read the docs.

I'll probably sit on this one until Cocktail or YASU starts playing up, thus avoiding geekdome until the last possible moment. :D
