Here's where to talk about preamps, cables, microphones, monitors, etc.

Rap voice efx - any ideas?

Post by NealF »

I've been listening occasionally to hip-hop from a production veiwpoint. I've noticed some nice voice doubling on the rap but it doesn't seem like actual doubling.

Not sure, but it sounds like one voice is pitched lower. Or is it two different people entirely? Any ideas?

I actually cut my teeth engineering with a hih hop r/b producer. Ganged vocals are very common in lots of music. Youre probably hearing different people recorded at the same time. The technique is not so different from the Mutt Lange background vocal technique. Multiple people recorded at the same time, then that done multiple times to layer.

Cool. I wasn't sure if it was a double tracking thing or not.

Thanks.
